Electrical Engineer (Power Distribution)

DEA Incorporated is a veteran‑owned leader in innovative electrical solutions for the mining and industrial sectors, specializing in high‑reliability power distribution systems like our flagship Terminator and underground Power Distribution products. Based in Spokane, WA, we prioritize safety, quality and customer success in challenging environments. Our team thrives on collaboration, continuous improvement and engineering excellence, fostering a supportive culture where employees grow alongside cutting‑edge projects. As we expand, we’re seeking passionate professionals to join us as we work to deliver safe, cost‑effective solutions.

Position Overview

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer with proven power distribution experience to round out our senior engineering team and lead the design and development of advanced underground electrical and controls equipment for the mining and industrial sectors. Reporting to the Senior Electrical Engineer, you will focus on innovating high‑reliability power distribution systems, including medium voltage switchgear, mobile substations and automation integrations, ensuring our products excel in harsh environments while meeting rigorous safety and performance standards. This role involves hands‑on design, project management and collaboration with cross‑functional teams, with opportunities to mentor junior staff and drive strategic initiatives. Flexible hours (average 40‑45 per week) and occasional travel for on‑site support or client consultations are expected. If you’re an experienced EE with a strong background in power distribution and a passion for incorporating the latest technologies in variable frequency drives (VFDs), intelligent protection relays and remote monitoring systems, this position offers a chance to shape the future of underground electrical systems at a growing company.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and optimisation of cutting‑edge power distribution systems (480V to 35kV) for underground mining operations and other heavy industries applications, to enhance reliability and efficiency in harsh environments.
  • Oversee engineering projects from concept to commissioning, including system architecture, component selection, load analysis, voltage drop management, short‑circuit studies, power‑factor correction, integration of PLC/HMI programming and distributed control systems.
  • Estimate project costs, prepare customer quotes, define testing criteria, and manage timelines for bidding, design and implementation.
  • Develop and implement equipment test procedures to ensure optimal performance, safety and compliance with standards such as MSHA, NEC, IEEE and UL508A. Review and approve red‑line markups, and prepare technical documentation (schematics, blueprints, reports).
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers, technicians and cross‑functional teams to resolve design challenges, incorporate client feedback and innovate products like mine power stations, disconnect boxes, portable substations and equipment repairs.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians, providing leadership on best practices in power distribution, quality assurance, continuous improvement and problem‑solving in electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Support field troubleshooting, customer consultations and site visits, including remote diagnostics, commissioning of equipment/systems with occasional travel.
  • Stay current with emerging trends in underground power distribution, such as upgrades for deeper mines and integration of sustainable technologies.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned by leadership, demonstrating adaptability in a dynamic, innovative environment.
Required Qualifications and Skills
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) or a related field from an ABET‑accredited program; Master’s degree or Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Experience: 7+ years in electrical engineering, with a specialised focus on power distribution in industrial or mining settings; proven track record in designing and commissioning power systems, medium voltage equipment or automation in harsh environments is essential.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Expertise in medium and low voltage power distribution design and electrical system analysis, including load flow, arc‑flash mitigation and protection coordination.
    • Strong knowledge of electrical troubleshooting tools (multimeters, current injectors, insulation testers) and MSHA‑compliant ground monitoring.
    • Ability to interpret complex electrical schematics, one‑lines, three‑lines and specifications. Ability to follow component layouts/general arrangement drawings.
    • Preferably experience in integrating substations and motor controls for underground operations.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal abilities; proven problem‑solving skills with a track record of delivering high‑quality, innovative power solutions on time. We partner with our clients to create tailored solutions that meet their unique needs.
  • Other Requirements: Willingness to work flexible hours and travel occasionally (valid driver’s license required); physical ability to lift up to 35 lbs; commitment to safety (OSHA or MSHA certification preferred).
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary range: $98,000 – $125,000 annually (commensurate with experience).
  • Comprehensive benefits including health, dental and vision insurance; 401(k) with company match; paid time off; and professional development opportunities (training, certifications and conference attendance).
