Job summary

RRC Companies seeks an Electrical Engineer IV - BESS to lead utility-scale energy storage projects across the U.S. and Canada, working from remote locations or any of our offices.

You will design medium- and low-voltage systems, oversee studies, mentor engineers, manage multi-project scopes, budgets, and schedules, and ensure compliance with IEEE/NEC and interconnection requirements. Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the United States required.
  • 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in BESS, renewable energy, utility, transmission, distribution, or power systems engineering.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or related field required.
  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or Renewable Energy preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering design and execution of utility-scale BESS projects from conceptual development through construction and commissioning.
  • Review and stamp BESS electrical design packages for projects across the United States.
  • Serve as the technical lead, mentoring engineers and designers and overseeing technical oversight.
  • Review and approve engineering calculations, reports, specifications, and construction drawings.
  • Stay current on emerging BESS technologies and industry standards.

This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of the evolving energy production landscape.RRC CORE VALUESMust understand and personify RRC’s core values:Client Satisfaction – understands the goal of always exceeding our client’s expectationsEmployee Happiness – able to work well with others, communicate clearly with coworkers, promote a positive work environment, and mediate conflicts between team membersQuality Work - able to take ownership, work independently, prioritize workload, and deliver quality results on time while working on multiple projects simultaneouslyAbove and Beyond - versatile, flexible, able to anticipate the needs of the company, take the initiative, and willing to go out of your way to assist othersESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESLead the engineering design and execution of utility-scale BESS projects from conceptual development through construction and commissioningReview and stamp BESS electrical design packages for projects throughout the United StatesServe as the technical lead for BESS projects, providing guidance, mentorship, and technical oversight to engineers and designersDesign and review medium-voltage collection systems, AC and DC power systems, inverter/PCS systems, battery container integration, auxiliary systems, and protection and control schemesPerform and oversee power system studies including load flow, short circuit, grounding, arc flash, protection coordination, ampacity, and loss analysisReview and approve engineering calculations, design packages, technical reports, specifications, and construction drawingsManage engineering scope, schedules, budgets, and resource allocation across multiple projectsCoordinate with project managers, clients, utilities, EPCs, equipment vendors, and internal multidisciplinary teamsServe as a point of contact for clients and support proposal development, project scoping, and business development initiativesReview and approve manufacturer equipment drawings, technical submittals, and vendor documentationEnsure compliance with applicable codes, standards, QA/QC procedures, utility requirements, and project specificationsIdentify technical risks, develop mitigation strategies, and resolve complex engineering challengesSupport procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup activities, including field visits and technical troubleshootingPerform QAQC reviews on project deliverables produced by engineering staffContribute to the development and improvement of engineering standards, design guides, and best practicesStay current on emerging BESS technologies, energy storage trends, utility requirements, and renewable energy market developmentsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)Professional Engineer (PE) license in the United States required8+ years of progressively responsible experience in BESS, renewable energy, utility, transmission, distribution, or power systems engineeringBachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or related field requiredMaster’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or Renewable Energy preferredDemonstrated experience serving as a lead engineer or technical lead on utility-scale BESS projectsExtensive experience designing medium- and low-voltage electrical systems and associated infrastructureStrong understanding of switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, protective relays, breakers, transformers, and protection systemsExperience with battery container systems, Energy Management Systems (EMS), Battery Management Systems (BMS), and SCADA integrationExperience designing inverter and PCS equipment and associated interconnectionsStrong knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards including IEEE, NEC, NESC, NFPA, CSA, and utility interconnection requirementsExperience performing power system studies using ETAP, CYME, SKM, EasyPower, PSCAD, or similar softwareExperience with modeling tools such as HOMER, Energy Toolbase, ESWare, or similar energy storage analysis platformsFamiliarity with utility-scale solar, wind generation, substations, and transmission systemsExperience supporting interconnections to transmission, distribution, substations, and renewable generation facilitiesConstruction support, field engineering, commissioning, or startup experience preferredStrong leadership, mentoring, project management, communication, and client relationship skillsAbility to manage multiple priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced environmentAbility to travel periodically (10%) throughout the United States as project needs require.BENEFITSRRC is committed to investing in talented employees because we recognize that healthy, happy employees provide the best path to sustaining a successful business.
