Job summary

CenterPoint Energy is seeking a Substation Engineer in Houston, Texas, to join the Substation Resilience Engineering Design Team. You will provide engineering support for the design, analysis, construction and operations of CenterPoint Energy's substations with a focus on electrical and structural design.

You will use CAD, SAP, GIS and Microstation to develop drawings, prepare packages, and coordinate with field personnel and vendors to ensure timely project delivery and safe operation of

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum two years of electric utility or power engineering experience.
  • Experience in substation physical design is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer and review electrical design drawings for substations.
  • Develop one-lines, relay and metering diagrams, and schematics.
  • Manage projects to meet timelines and reasonable costs.
  • Prepare engineering/construction packages with BOMs and maps.
  • Coordinate with inspectors, engineers, vendors and field personnel.
  • Support construction, operation, and maintenance of substation infrastructure.

Job Summary

CenterPoint Energyis looking for aSubstation Engineerto join ourSubstation Resilience Engineering Design Team, located inHouston, Texas.You will have the ability to provide engineering technical support associated with the design, analysis, construction, and operations of CenterPoint Energy's substations. This position will be more focused on the Electrical and Structural design of substations.

Essential Functions
  • Engineer and review physical design electrical drawings, plan and profile drawings, grounding, conduit, foundation, and vendor drawings as necessary to facilitate the design and construction of substation facilities.
  • Develop, review, and analyze basic one lines, relay and metering one lines, AC / DC schematics, SCADA diagrams, interconnection diagrams, and schematics as necessary to facilitate the design and construction of substation facilities.
  • Manages basic, standard, or complex engineering projects and studies, ensuring completion by established timeline and at a reasonable cost.
  • Prepares engineering and construction packages, including maps, material bills, drawings and work orders.
  • Interface with inspectors, engineers, construction personnel, warehousing personnel, purchasing agents, vendors and management regarding materials and standards development, procurement, and packaging issues.
  • Support the construction, operation, and maintenance of CNP substation infrastructure through effective communication with field personnel and contractors.
  • Prepare and coordinate the ordering and fabrication of standard and non-standard project material.
  • Prepare and review work orders and project bill of material documentation to ensure proper material is ordered in a timely manner.
  • Resolves problems during engineering or construction projects to develop sound solutions based on engineeringbest practices.
  • Performs accurate engineering design calculations and analysis with minimal supervision.
  • Develops design options or recommendations for structures, systems and components.
  • Reviews and evaluates existing and new technology, engineering methods and operating philosophies for potential system improvement.

  • Able to manage time effectively, handle multiple tasks and priorities, operate under general direction, develop own work methods as required yet follow standard procedures and determine when management is to be consulted on unusual situations.
  • Able to use CAD equipment and software programs to provide project documentation.
  • Able to use SAP, GIS, and Microstation for technical engineering applications.
  • Able to make informed decisions, follow procedures and comply with policies based on the knowledge of the work and the services provided by CenterPoint Energy.
  • Able to understand and follow electric safety principles and work safely around energized equipment and environments where CNP facilities are located
  • Able to complete assigned All-Hazards Operations Plan responsibility.
  • Able to demonstrate commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations, the Company's Ethics and Compliance Code of Conduct, and other Company policies and procedures and do so consistently, take all required training courses and do so timely.
  • Able to work and participate successfully in a team environment to accomplish assignments.
  • Able to work well with both technical and non-technical personnel to gather and exchange information, resolve issues, plan activities, and meet or exceed objectives.
  • Able to communicate effectively, in oral and written form, with co-workers, customers, vendors and the community.
  • Interprets and applies applicable codes and standards (i.e. National Electric Safety Code, National Electric Code, etc.)
  • Able to provide and maintain a valid state driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Able to comply with all company driver safety policy requirements.
Education Description

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.

Experience
  • This position will be more focused on the Electrical and Structural design of substations. Experience in substation physical design is a plus.
  • Requires a minimum of two years of electric utility or power engineering experience that includes performing engineering calculations and design.
  • Able to perform inspections of work sites, coordinate and exchange ideas with field personnel, vendors and fabricators, and follow up with inspections.
Physical Requirements
  • Able to communicate either written and verbal communications either in person or through technical equipment such as telephone.
  • Able to demonstrate and apply the manual dexterity to operate a personal computer and common office equipment.
  • Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Able to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time.
  • Able to certify and use personal protective equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hardhat, gloves, protective footwear and earplugs on a daily basis.
  • Able to operate a motor vehicle and drive a motor vehicle daily or for extended time periods, in a safe manner, and enter/exit vehicle unassisted.
Working Conditions
  • Required to participate in CenterPoint Energy's Emergency Operation Plan (EOP).
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Able to work in an office environment.
  • Able to work indoors in an office environment and outdoors with occasional exposure to all weather conditions, equipment, and noise when at field installation sites.
  • Able to work regular hours, with occasional or mandatory overtime; may be required to work rotating shifts.
