Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan is seeking an Electrical Engineer for Morenci, AZ. The role focuses on providing technical guidance for electrical projects, supporting safety, and improving site efficiency.

You will work with Senior Engineers on developing projects and managing small to medium site construction efforts. The position requires a degree in Electrical Engineering (Master’s preferred) and experience with power systems, PLCs, and control systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required in Electrical Engineering; Master’s degree preferred.
  • PE certification is a plus and may be required.
  • Knowledge of Electrical Engineering principles; familiarity with mechanical and process engineering.
  • Ability to analyze complex information and draw conclusions; strong safety awareness.
  • Familiarity with NEC & NFPA70E regulations; capable of using design software.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical advice for electrical engineering projects.
  • Assist Senior Engineer in developing projects using new tech to improve safety and efficiency.
  • Review and recommend actions on engineering projects.
  • Manage small to medium site construction or modification projects; support larger initiatives.
  • Administer vendor contracts for services and equipment; ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Develop and maintain awareness of local, state, and federal regulations.

Where You Will Work

Located approximately 50 miles northeast of Safford, Arizona on U.S. Highway 191, Morenci operations (an open-pit copper mining complex) has been in continuous operation since 1939. The operation consists of two concentrators, crushed-ore leach pad and stacking system, a low-grade run-of-mine (ROM) leaching system; four SX plants; and three EW tank houses that produce copper cathode.

What You Will Do
  • Provide technical advice and guidance for assigned electrical engineering projects.
  • Assist Senior Engineer in developing Electrical Engineering projects utilizing new technology to constantly upgrade and improve site safety, efficiencies, cost controls, quality controls and protection of the environment.
  • Review, investigate and develop appropriate recommendations regarding assigned Engineering projects
  • Manage small to medium site construction, expansion or modification projects, and assists the Senior Engineer on large/complex site planning/construction, expansion or modifications
  • Administer contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment
  • Develop working knowledge of local, state and federal regulations appropriate to area of assignment
  • Assist the Senior Engineer in contributing to site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for designated Engineering areas
  • Develop and evaluate AFE’s (Authorization for Expenditure) for capital funding requests
  • May represent the site on company sponsored steering committees, task forces, or teams
  • Perform other duties as required
What You Bring To Freeport
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering disciplineandthree (3) years of related experience in Engineering,OR
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering disciplineandtwo (2) years of related experience in Engineering
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of Electrical Engineering with an understanding of Mechanical and Process Engineering techniques
  • Ability to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Familiarity and some experience in Electronics, PLCs, and Control Systems
  • Skill in managing small to medium Engineering projects
  • Ability to evaluate and implement new methods and techniques for operational improvement
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree or Professional Engineering (PE) Certification
  • Experience with or classes related to Power Systems Engineering
  • Experience with Power System Modeling software such as SKM, eTAP, etc.
  • Familiarity with industrial AC and DC motors, VFD’s and plant instrumentation
  • Familiarity with powerline layout, engineering and construction
  • Familiarity with MV power systems
  • Leadership and construction / mining experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of NEC & NFPA70E Regulations
  • Familiarity with designing Power, Instrumentation and Controls Systems
  • Experience with ETAP and AutoCAD or similar software for design
  • Self-motivated with excellent work ethic
  • Proficiency in MS Office
What We Offer You

The estimated annual pay range for this role is currently$87,500-$120,000. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance. More details will be shared during the hiring process.
