Overview

Department 451 (D451) Waterfront Electrical Engineering is an integral part of Electric Boat's New Construction business. With this business, Electric Boat provides mission-ready submarines to the fleet through construction, test, and post-shakedown deck-plate support. D451 engineers provide engineering support for work activities on submarines, including the planning, execution, and certification of work.

D451 consists of four distinct groups that supports the construction of submarines for the US Navy:

    Reactor Plant Electrical
  1. Non-Propulsion Electrical Engineering
  2. Propulsion Plant Electrical Engineering
  3. Instrumentation, Design & Test

D451 Engineering operates in a collaborative, dynamic, team-oriented manner. Using a design-build approach, D451 interfaces with Operations, Design, Planning Yard, Test, and Program Office personnel in order to arrive at innovative solutions to difficult problems. Additionally, interaction with the United States Navy (USN) customer is typical, including the Supervisor of Shipbuilding Groton (SOSG), Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), subcontractors, and submarine crews.

D451 Engineering supports submarine construction work locally and at off site locations including Quonset Point, Rhode Island and Newport News, Virginia, as well as Naval Submarine Base New London. Strong written and verbal communication skills are utilized and fostered. A hands-on, proactive, deadline-driven engineering approach is the norm. Awareness and understanding of military specifications, submarine shipbuilding specifications and design criteria, USN maintenance/overhaul requirements, and special emphasis programs are developed through mentoring and training.

Tasks required of the D451 waterfront electrical engineer include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Planning of submarine upgrade, troubleshooting, and repair work. This includes the development of troubleshooting courses of action and writing / peer reviewing technical work documents.
  • Interpretation and translation of shipbuilding specifications, technical manual procedures, and contractual requirements.
  • Deck-plate support and resolution of emergent issues. Ability to work in shipyard environment and onboard ships is required.
  • Development of technical rationale to support approval of nonconforming conditions.
  • Collaboration with engineers of other disciplines, including mechanical, nuclear, and structural.
  • Hardware and software design and development of data acquisition systems.
