A prominent defense contractor is seeking an entry-level structural engineer to specialize in submarine hulls and support the U.S. Navy's VIRGINIA Class submarine projects. The role entails troubleshooting and evaluating construction issues within a dynamic engineering team, offering flexible work arrangements. Ideal candidates should have a relevant engineering degree and a proactive, team-oriented approach.
Overview
Waterfront Structural Engineering is seeking an entry-level structural engineer specializing in submarine hulls, external, or internal structures. The role involves troubleshooting construction issues at shipyards and evaluating these conditions through calculations and reports in the Groton office. The candidate will gain knowledge in various submarine structures, including pressure hulls, non-pressure hulls, external structures, bulkheads, tanks, component foundations, decking, furniture, and lockers. Support is provided for submarines under construction at Electric Boat shipyards in Groton and Quonset Point, Newport News shipyard in Virginia, and other vendors across the U.S.
The engineering team works in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment, leveraging skills in statics, dynamics, strength of materials, material science, and problem-solving. Clear communication is essential, as the engineer will regularly interact with customers such as NAVSEA and internal teams at shipyards in Groton, Quonset Point, and Newport News.
The waterfront team is dynamic and growing, supporting the U.S. Navy's latest $22 billion VIRGINIA Class submarine contract. The engineer's role is to ensure the quality of the as-built condition of the submarine, which is critical for its operational mission, rather than designing new submarines.
Electric Boat offers flexible work arrangements, allowing some remote work, depending on the nature of classified materials and other factors. Candidates should inquire about specific arrangements during interviews.
