Job description

Electrical Engineer – Riverside, CA (also available in Irvine, CA and Los Angeles, CA)

This position involves providing technical assistance and guidance for due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale projects. The engineer will assist with research, design, concept development, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, power distribution, power regulation, renewable energy, and protection and control systems across various contexts.

Your Impact
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data related to substation components, equipment specifications for procurement packages, IFR/IRC design and review processes, and IEEE/NESC Standards/NERC regulations.
  • Review third‑party design documents, procurement lists, and project plans.
  • Perform professional electrical engineering work for single line, three line, wiring diagrams, GA, substation layout, bus arrangement, grounding grid design, lightning protection in conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
  • Incorporate future‑ready techniques, concept development, operating strategies, equipment sizing and cabling, AC/DC panel design, conduit and trenching design strategies.
  • Support senior engineers with research and recommendations of fundamental components and field equipment applications.
  • Provide technical assistance on engineering, design, testing, maintenance modifications, and construction procedures.
  • Develop electrical calculations: loads, equipment sizing, feeder sizing, voltage drop, grounding, lighting circuits and controls, facility and electrical service, and power distribution.
  • Prepare data visualizations, tables, charts, accurate reports, sketches, calculations, and illustrations for data interpretation and presentation.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for precision measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to execute project work, including layout, cost & quantity estimation, compliance with specifications, permits, and regulatory analysis.
  • Assist with development and scoping of small‑to‑medium sized projects.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research findings to improve or address design and engineering issues.
  • Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gather information on design and construction problems or future needs.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret data from field investigations, contribute to action plans for low‑mid‑level risk mitigation.
  • Help prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers and disciplines on projects with electrical infrastructure authorities across federal, state, regional, and local funded projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering.
  • 3–5 years of post‑education experience or prior electrical design experience.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, design/build processes and application to permitting and project work.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including rehabilitation and new design.
  • Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
  • Knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
  • Effective self‑leadership, attention to detail, results orientation, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques and perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to apply technical knowledge to testing results, data collation, statistical analysis, and arrive at effective solutions.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and abiding by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
  • Prior Design Experience on education‑related projects.
