Job summary

Sargent & Lundy’s Nuclear Power Group is seeking an electrical engineer to join a project team designing, modifying, and analyzing power plant electrical systems. The role involves solving complex electrical issues and preparing calculations and documentation for design inputs and reports.

Qualified candidates have a BS in Electrical Engineering with ABET accreditation, 3+ years in project-based electrical design, and experience with medium/low voltage systems and protective relay settings.

Qualifications

  • BS in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program is required.
  • Experience designing electrical systems for power plants, including MV/LV distribution, transformers, generators, and motors.
  • Ability to review designs and prepare calculations and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a project team to design, modify, and analyze electrical systems for power plants.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and solve electrical engineering issues.
  • Prepare and review calculations (three phase AC/DC, short circuit, voltage drop, motor starting).
  • Prepare engineering documentation and design input for drawings, reports, and studies.
  • Develop project work plans and help ensure on-time, on-budget delivery.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the electrical engineering lead or project manager, this position will offer you the opportunity to work in a project team environment with other engineers and designers involved in the design, modification, and analysis of new and existing power plant electrical systems
  • You will work on challenging assignments that include investigating, trouble‑shooting, and solving a wide variety of electrical engineering issues
  • Assist the electrical engineering lead or project manager in efforts to ensure projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget
  • Prepare and review detailed calculations, including three phase AC and DC power studies, short circuit, voltage drop, motor starting and protective relay settings
  • Prepare engineering documentation for design input for drawing production
  • Prepare and review engineering reports and studies that present technical information in a clear and concise manner and meet client requirements and S&L formats
  • Perform independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations and drawing preparation
  • Develop project work plans

Essential Skills And Experience
  • A BS in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited engineering program is required
  • 3 or more years of experience in the design of electrical engineering systems in a project team environment with a focus on integrated, detailed system design for new plants, or modifications or replacements for existing plants; experience should include the selection of equipment, materials, control philosophy, and the preparation and assembling of calculations and specifications
  • Experience is required with electrical system design including medium and low voltage distribution systems (transformers, generators, motors), equipment selection, and analytical calculations
  • Experience with serving as firm/client liaison in a support or lead engineering role
  • Experience in reviewing design drawings created by others
  • Effective critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective working in teams and individual work
  • Detail oriented approach to work
Valued But Not Required Skills And Experience
  • PE license
  • MSEE
  • Construction and start‑up experience a plus

  • Programming or scripting (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate calculations, design checks, reporting, or data transformation is valued but not required.
  • We also value additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other training in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that helps you apply automation or agentic AI to real engineering problems.
