Job Description

Electrical Engineer -- Midstream Facilities

Employment Type: Full-time

Location: Houston, Texas

Position Overview

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the design, construction, commissioning, and ongoing operation of electrical infrastructure across midstream oil and gas facilities.

This position will provide technical leadership for power generation and distribution systems, motors, variable-frequency drives, protective relaying, grounding, emergency power, facility controls, and related equipment. The engineer will work closely with operations, construction, project management, environmental and safety teams, commercial stakeholders, and outside engineering firms.

The ideal candidate combines hands-on electrical engineering knowledge with the ability to manage multiple projects, evaluate equipment and designs, troubleshoot facility issues, and improve the safety and reliability of operating assets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, review, and evaluate electrical designs for new facilities, expansions, upgrades, and equipment replacements.
  • Specify and select electrical equipment for processing plants, compressor stations, terminals, pipelines, and related infrastructure.
  • Support medium- and low-voltage power distribution systems, utility connections, generation equipment, transformers, switchgear, motor control centers, motors, starters, and variable-frequency drives.
  • Prepare and evaluate technical proposals, equipment bids, vendor documentation, engineering recommendations, and material selections.
  • Perform or review electrical studies involving load flow, short-circuit conditions, motor starting, voltage drop, protective-device coordination, load shedding, and arc-flash hazards.
  • Develop and maintain electrical specifications, design criteria, equipment standards, and hazardous-area classification drawings.
  • Interpret and apply applicable electrical codes, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.
  • Provide technical guidance to operations, maintenance, construction, and project teams.
  • Investigate electrical equipment failures, system reliability concerns, and design deficiencies at new and existing facilities.
  • Recommend corrective actions and long-term improvements based on engineering analysis and field conditions.
  • Review drawings, calculations, studies, specifications, and equipment selections produced by engineering contractors.
  • Coordinate with electric utilities and assist with service requirements, interconnection matters, and commercial agreements.
  • Create technical scopes of work, project budgets, cost estimates, and authorization-quality funding estimates.
  • Monitor project scope, cost, schedule, technical quality, and completion of assigned deliverables.
  • Provide field engineering support during construction, equipment installation, startup, testing, and commissioning.
  • Support preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for critical electrical equipment.
  • Identify opportunities to improve power reliability, energy efficiency, operating performance, regulatory compliance, and facility safety.
  • Contribute to short- and long-range capital planning for assigned facilities and operating assets.
  • Manage multiple engineering priorities while maintaining clear communication with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited four-year university.
  • Working knowledge of electrical codes and standards applicable to industrial facilities, including NEC and NFPA requirements.
  • Understanding of industrial power systems, electrical equipment, and safe design practices.
  • Ability to review engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Strong written, verbal, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across engineering, operations, construction, and business teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and related business applications.
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 25%.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Electrical engineering experience within midstream oil and gas, pipelines, natural gas processing, compression, terminals, petrochemical facilities, or another heavy industrial environment.
  • Experience designing or supporting industrial power generation and distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of protective relaying, switchgear, transformers, motor control centers, electrical motors, starters, and variable-frequency drives.
  • Experience using ETAP, SKM PowerTools, EasyPower, or comparable electrical-system modeling software.
  • Experience conducting or reviewing load-flow, short-circuit, coordination, motor-starting, and arc-flash studies.
  • Familiarity with preventive and predictive maintenance practices for industrial electrical equipment.
  • General understanding of PLC-based controls, instrumentation, shutdown systems, and electrical-control interfaces.
  • Experience supporting construction, commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, and operating facilities.
  • Professional Engineer licensure or progress toward licensure is beneficial but not required.
