Job description

Job Summary

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first‑of‑a‑kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA‑EMS' expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

Responsibilities

We are hiring an Electrical Engineer specializing in Power Systems to join our team in Rancho Bernardo. This position is responsible for supporting the Electrical Engineering sustainment team in resolving a wide range of advanced technical issues as well as a development and design of advanced power systems, including transformer design, motor controllers, power supplies, megawatt‑scale inverters, and other high‑performance components for both Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG) and Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch Systems (EMALS). The candidate will evaluate, interpret and resolve systems engineering problems to meet the design requirements.

Under general direction with limited review, this position is responsible for applying innovative approaches to resolving complex engineering challenges related to power systems. Assignments are outlined in terms of overall objectives and reviewed largely at completion. The engineer will initiate project planning and develop innovative designs to meet goals, while independently performing challenging engineering work with clear expectations. Responsibilities include documenting findings, presenting technical results, and representing the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single‑component projects.

  • Evaluate, interpret and resolve systems engineering problems to meet the design requirements.
  • Perform detailed design of electric energy storage, electric power conditioning, AC and DC distribution, and analog and digital control systems for operating electromechanical rotating machinery in the 10’s of MW range.
  • Develop innovative but practical solutions to advance technical problems in engineering.
  • Address complex and difficult technical and manufacturing issues during the build of EMALS and AAG systems and sub‑systems.
  • Create, re‑draw and update drawings utilizing engineering change process and tools.
  • Participate in the internal and external technical project/program reviews including preliminary and critical/detailed design reviews to ensure they meet defined product requirements.
  • Prepare and review documented design inputs for electrical design, as well as identify obsolescence required in support of the continuous operation of EMALS and AAG systems.
  • Troubleshoot conflicting design/development requirements, difficult coordination requirements, and special material requirements.
  • Review requirement matrix and/or statement of work to generate basis of estimates in support of customer proposals.
  • Generate plan and procedures for systems qualification testing, as well as factory acceptance testing, utilizing engineering and scientific principles.
  • Present reports at engineering meetings, participate in program reviews and consult on problems.
Job Qualifications
  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree, master's degree, or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows: four or more years of experience with a bachelor's degree or two or more years of experience with a master's degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Experience in planning, designing, fabricating, and testing advanced electric power inverters, power systems, analog and digital, and embedded control systems.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment and organize work assignments to meet established timetables.
  • Strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required, as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to work extended hours as required. An EIT (Engineer in Training) certificate is desirable.
  • Must be customer focused and able to work on a self‑initiated basis or in a team environment and able to work extended hours and travel as required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is required.

We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.
