Job summary

Optima Engineering in Raleigh, NC is seeking a seasoned Electrical Engineer to join our employee-owned MEP practice. You will design electrical systems for education, municipal, K-12 and commercial facilities, collaborating with project teams from concept through construction.

The ideal candidate holds a North Carolina PE, a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, 10+ years of experience, and proficiency in Revit or AutoCAD. Excellent communication and coordination skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • PE license in North Carolina is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in MEP building systems design.
  • Proficiency in Revit and/or AutoCAD.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and analytical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with project managers to develop electrical system designs from concept through construction.
  • Design lighting, power distribution, fire alarm, and low‑voltage systems to meet codes.
  • Prepare drawings, specs, and calculations in Revit or AutoCAD.
  • Perform load calculations, panel schedules, and equipment sizing.
  • Conduct field investigations and site observations; review submittals and RFIs.
  • Support construction administration and quality control reviews.
  • Mentor junior staff and share technical expertise.

We are looking for a skilled and dedicated Electrical Engineer to join our team and help us continue to provide thoughtful and efficient designs for our clients.

Requirements
  • Required: Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in North Carolina
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in MEP building systems design for higher education, municipal, K-12, and/or commercial facilities
  • Proficiency in Revit and/or AutoCAD required
  • Strong communication, coordination, and analytical skills.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with project managers and multidisciplinary teams to develop electrical system designs from concept through construction
  • Design lighting, power distribution, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems that meet project requirements and codes
  • Prepare drawings, specifications, and calculations in Revit or AutoCAD
  • Perform load calculations, circuiting, panel schedules, and equipment sizing
  • Conduct field investigations, site observations, and existing system assessments
  • Review submittals, respond to RFIs, and provide construction administration support
  • Participate in interdisciplinary coordination and quality control reviews to ensure accurate, high-quality deliverables
  • Assist in mentoring junior staff and sharing technical expertise across the team
Skills
  • Strong understanding of electrical power distribution, lighting design, and fire alarm systems
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (NEC, IES, NFPA, ASHRAE, etc.)
  • Ability to produce complete electrical design packages including plans, one-lines, panel schedules, and details
  • Experience with short-circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies preferred
  • Knowledge of renewable energy and sustainable design principles a plus.
