Job summary

Integrated Power Services (IPS) is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer focused on protection and power systems. You will design protection and control schematics for medium/high voltage systems, retrofit relays, and run power system studies to ensure reliability.

Travel to customer sites may be required for data collection and project support. The role requires 3+ years in power systems, understanding of arc flash and coordination studies, and proficiency in engineering tools.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required.
• 3+ years in power systems engineering, protective relaying, or electrical design.
• Knowledge of electrical protection systems and relay coordination.
• Experience performing arc flash and coordination studies.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.
• Ability to travel occasionally to customer sites.
• PE license preferred.
• Experience with SKM PowerTools, ETAP, EasyPower, or similar study software preferred.
• Experience with SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, Schweitzer, or equivalent protective relays preferred.
• Knowledge of utility, industrial, and critical power applications preferred.
• Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, NFPA 70E, and other applicable industry standards preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop and review protection and control schematics for medium- and high-voltage systems.
• Design and implement relay retrofit solutions for substations, industrial facilities, and utility applications.
• Create wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and bill of materials.
• Develop relay setting files and protection philosophies per requirements.
• Support construction, modernization, and electrical infrastructure upgrades.
• Perform arc flash hazard analyses per NFPA 70E and IEEE standards.
• Conduct protective device coordination studies.
• Perform short-circuit, load flow, motor starting, and power quality studies.
• Develop engineering reports and technical recommendations.
• Utilize power system analysis software to model and evaluate systems.
• Provide technical support throughout project execution.
• Interface with customers to gather data and define requirements.
• Work with project teams to ensure on-time delivery.
• Review specs for compliance with codes and standards.
• Support commissioning as necessary.
• Travel to customer sites for site walks and data collection.
• Participate in technical meetings with stakeholders.
• Assist with troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.

Responsibilities & Expectations:

The Electrical Design Engineer - Protection & Power Systems is responsible for developing electrical protection and control designs, performing power system studies, and supporting relay modernization and electrical infrastructure projects. This role will lead engineering efforts related to protective relay retrofits, arc flash analysis, coordination studies, control schematics, and power system modeling. While the position is primarily office-based, occasional travel to customer facilities may be required for site assessments, project support, and technical consultation.

The ideal candidate possesses strong knowledge of electrical power systems, protective relaying, and power system analysis, with the ability to collaborate effectively with project managers, field technicians, and customers to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.

Engineering & Design

• Develop and review protection and control schematics for medium- and high-voltage electrical systems.
• Design and implement relay retrofit solutions for substations, industrial facilities, and utility applications.
• Create wiring diagrams, panel layouts, elementary drawings, and bill of materials.
• Develop relay setting files and protection philosophies in accordance with customer and industry requirements.
• Support new construction, modernization, and electrical infrastructure upgrade projects.

Power System Studies

• Perform arc flash hazard analyses in accordance with NFPA 70E and IEEE standards.
• Conduct protective device coordination studies.
• Perform short-circuit, load flow, motor starting, and power quality studies.
• Develop engineering reports and technical recommendations for customers.
• Utilize power system analysis software to model and evaluate electrical systems.

Project Support

• Provide technical support throughout project execution.
• Interface with customers to gather system data and define project requirements.
• Work closely with project managers, field engineers, and technicians to ensure successful project delivery.
• Review project specifications and ensure engineering compliance with applicable codes and standards.
• Support commissioning activities as necessary.

Field & Customer Support

• Travel to customer sites periodically to perform site walks, collect system information, and support engineering projects.
• Participate in technical meetings with customers and project stakeholders.
• Assist with troubleshooting and root cause analysis of power system issues when required.
• Support field teams with engineering guidance and technical expertise.

Qualifications and Competencies:

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
• 3+ years of experience in power systems engineering, protective relaying, or electrical design.
• Knowledge of electrical protection systems and relay coordination.
• Experience performing arc flash and coordination studies.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.
• Ability to travel occasionally to customer sites.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
• Experience with SKM PowerTools, ETAP, EasyPower, or similar study software preferred.

This job involves both indoor and outdoor work. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

• Lift, carry and/or move up to 75 pounds repeatedly.
• Climb ladders, staircases, step stools, stand, walk, sit, and operate vehicles for extended periods.
• Bend, stoop, crawl and work in awkward positions or confined spaces for several hours.
