Summary

The Controls Design Engineer will be responsible for owning all software aspects of various machinery and tooling projects, ranging from small R&D tasks to large-scale production equipment. The role involves working with customers to define project needs and specifications, often in interdisciplinary teams, to deliver integrated and functional solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, test, install, and integrate software solutions related to automation, machine vision, robotics, and data management.
  • Program and integrate off-the-shelf components such as cameras, sensors, motors, and robots.
  • Meet project budgets and schedules.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers on progress and issues.
  • Support production during debugging, commissioning, and installation.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical teams for system integration.
  • Manage external suppliers and coordinate with customers to refine requirements and interfaces.
  • Support equipment deployment and provide service at customer sites (approx. 5% travel).
Education & Experience

Experience developing software for PLCs or similar devices; college experience acceptable. Required skills include:

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as VB.NET or C.
  • Basic knowledge of HMI/GUI and PLC development environments.
  • Understanding communication protocols like RS232, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, CAN bus.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering.
  • Experience in controls design within industrial automation or machine building environments.
  • Knowledge of programming and tuning servo motors, stepper motors, and VFDs.
  • Experience with vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, etc.).
  • Familiarity with field devices, sensors, actuators, and I/O signals.
  • Troubleshooting automated equipment experience.
