Job description

Powerus is building a next-generation American autonomous systems platform designed to move, protect, and sustain critical assets in high-consequence environments. The company combines advanced autonomy, manufacturing capability, operational expertise, and strategic acquisitions to support defense, national security, critical infrastructure, and commercial operations globally.

Mission

Our mission is to deliver resilient autonomous technologies that strengthen national security, improve operational safety, and expand the capabilities of organizations operating in complex environments.

Why Join Powerus

Good electrical design is portable. Architecture, schematic capture, analysis, and the documentation a factory builds from are all work that travels - and the engineers who are best at it are not all within driving distance of Charlotte. So this one is open anywhere in the United States. Powerus is scaling unmanned platform production across North Carolina and California, and we would rather widen the search than insist that every hour of design work happen in one building. You will travel for bring-up, integration events, and reviews, and the rest is yours to run from where you are.

About the Role

Powerus is hiring an Electrical Design Engineer, open to candidates anywhere in the United States, to own electrical design work for our unmanned platforms. The role is weighted toward architecture, schematic design, analysis, component selection, and the documentation packages that manufacturing and test build from. You will partner closely with hardware, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers in Charlotte and California, and travel periodically for bring-up, integration, and design reviews. Hands-on validation is part of the job; it is concentrated into trips rather than spread across every week.

Responsibilities
  • Develop electrical architecture and detailed design for power, avionics, sensing, and interface functions
  • Capture schematics and drive designs through review, release, and revision control
  • Perform design analysis - worst case, derating, thermal, power budget, and margin
  • Select components against requirements, lifecycle, availability, and NDAA and Blue UAS constraints
  • Produce complete design packages: drawings, interface definitions, BOMs, and build documentation
  • Define wiring, harnessing, connector, and grounding schemes for vehicle integration
  • Write test and acceptance procedures for the designs you own
  • Support bring-up, integration, and troubleshooting on site during scheduled travel
  • Work with fabrication and assembly vendors on design for manufacturing and process questions
  • Collaborate asynchronously with distributed engineering through written design documentation and review
Qualifications
  • Must be located in the United States and eligible to work on-site at Powerus facilities during travel
  • Willing to travel periodically to Charlotte, NC and California for bring-up, integration, and reviews
  • Degree in electrical engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience owning electrical designs from architecture through released documentation
  • Strong written communication - remote design work lives or dies on the quality of the documentation
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and keep distributed collaborators current without prompting
  • U.S. Person status required (U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)); this role involves access to ITAR- and EAR-controlled technical data
Preferred Skills
  • Prior experience working effectively on hardware in a remote or distributed team
  • Experience with UAV, aerospace, defense, or another physical product with real environmental demands
  • Familiarity with an ECAD tool such as Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, or KiCad
  • Exposure to power system design, avionics, or embedded hardware
  • Experience producing manufacturing documentation packages that a factory built from without rework
  • Comfort with simulation tools for circuit, thermal, or power analysis
