Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Assistant Electrical Designer in Columbus to assist in planning, site evaluations, and development of electrical schematics, layouts, and drawings for a diverse project portfolio. You will work with project teams to ensure designs meet standards and client requirements.

The role involves CAD setup, drafting in 2D/3D, and collaboration with engineers and managers to produce documentation within deadlines. Strong attention to detail and communication are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in drafting technology or a related field and 2 years of related experience.
• Or Associate’s Degree and 3 years of related experience.
• Or 4 years of progressive detailing and design experience.
• Strong understanding of design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Excel to develop the design deliverables.
• Ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.
• Basic knowledge in design, calculations, and design systems.
• Ability to work collaboratively with Project Managers, Engineers and Designers in a multi-discipline team.
• Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Assist in designing electrical projects including schematics, grid layouts, power systems, lighting, protection and controls, and site/facility design.
• Assist with setup of electrical CAD configuration and procedures per project requirements.
• Prepare engineering drawings from rough sketches using CAD software.
• Perform drawing production work including design layout and calculations on non-routine assignments.
• Assist with assignments using prescribed methods including drawing sequence and presenting, sizing components, refining rough sketches.
• Assist with initial rough designs or sketches and redlines on ongoing projects.
• Analyze reports, drawings, and tests to plan and design projects.
• Apply design codes and specifications related to design requirements.
• Complete and review design drawings within scope, budget, and schedule.
• Incorporate schedules, budgets, and project criteria into electrical design and layouts.
• Organize and maintain revisions of project drawings and related information.
• Perform other duties as assigned; comply with policies.
