Electrical Controls Designer – Industrial AutomationLocation: Beaverton, ORPay: $85,000 – $105,000/year DOESchedule: Full-Time | Flexible Core Hours | Hybrid Flexibility After Onboarding
Who We Are:
We are partnering with a well-established industrial automation and control systems company that has been delivering innovative engineering solutions for nearly 30 years. This is an exciting opportunity for a technically skilled and detail-oriented Electrical Controls Designer who enjoys solving problems, developing creative solutions, and working on a wide variety of industrial applications. Our client specializes in custom control systems, industrial automation equipment, and electrical panel design for industries ranging from manufacturing and robotics to semiconductor production and food processing. You'll join a close-knit engineering team where your ideas matter, your technical skills will continue to grow, and you'll have the opportunity to take on increasing design responsibilities. This is a design, estimating, and documentation position—not a PLC programming or field service role.
What You'll Do:
- Develop electrical schematics, control panel layouts, and production-ready engineering drawings.
- Work alongside senior engineers to turn customer requirements into practical industrial control solutions.
- Create and maintain bills of materials (BOMs), cost estimates, and technical documentation.
- Utilize 2D CAD software, including DraftSight or AutoCAD, to develop and modify electrical designs.
- Research industrial automation components, evaluate alternatives, and identify appropriate replacements.
- Assist with component selection, power distribution, I/O lists, and control system layouts.
- Prepare material and labor estimates to support project quoting and proposals.
- Review existing designs and adapt proven engineering solutions to meet customer requirements.
- Maintain accurate revisions, redlines, and as-built documentation throughout project completion.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, sales, and production teams to ensure designs meet technical and customer expectations.
- Gradually take on greater responsibility for system design, estimating, and technical problem-solving as your experience grows.
What's In It for You:
- Competitive Salary: $85,000 – $105,000 annually, depending on experience.
- Work-Life Balance: Flexible core hours with hybrid/work-from-home opportunities after onboarding.
- Medical & Dental Insurance: Comprehensive coverage with generous employer contributions after 60 days.
- 401(k) Retirement Plan: Includes a 3% Safe Harbor employer contribution for eligible employees.
- Paid Vacation: Two weeks after your first year, increasing to three weeks after five years and four weeks after ten years.
- Earned PTO: Begin accruing personal time off from your first week.
- Paid Holidays: Nine paid company holidays annually.
- Professional Development: Opportunities for specialized training, mentorship, and continued technical growth.
- Career Advancement: A long-term opportunity to grow into greater engineering design and project responsibilities.
- Variety of Projects: Work on unique applications involving robotics, manufacturing, automation, industrial equipment, and more.
- Collaborative Environment: Join a smaller, supportive team where you work directly with experienced engineers and decision-makers.
What You Need to Have:
- Strong understanding of industrial electrical systems and automation components.
- Experience reading, interpreting, and creating electrical schematics.
- Proficiency with conventional 2D CAD software, such as AutoCAD or DraftSight.
- Familiarity with industrial control components, including PLCs, VFDs, relays, power supplies, and terminal blocks.
- Experience developing or maintaining bills of materials (BOMs).
- Ability to research electrical components, review technical datasheets, and identify suitable alternatives.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate engineering documentation.
- Proficiency with spreadsheets and technical estimating.
- Ability to work collaboratively with engineers and production teams.
- Strong problem-solving skills, technical curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
Highly Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with UL 508A control panel standards and NFPA 79.
- Experience with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software.
- Background in electrical enclosure design or control panel fabrication.
- Experience with industrial component purchasing or distribution.
- Knowledge of PCB schematic design and layout.
- Hands-on experience with electrical, mechanical, or electronic systems.
- Experience with motion controls.
We're looking for someone who is technically capable, naturally curious, and takes pride in getting the details right. You don't need to know everything on day one, but you should have a strong technical foundation, enjoy learning, and be motivated to grow into greater engineering responsibilities.
