Job summary

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) invites applications for an Electrical Component Engineer to join our Component Engineering Group in Rancho Bernardo, CA. You will own AML and BOM analysis, qualify and source mechanical and electromechanical parts, and collaborate with design, procurement, and manufacturing to ensure reliability, cost effectiveness, and regulatory compliance.

  • Strong communication, documentation and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to travel and support hardware manufacturing environments.

  • Sources components for existing and new products and updates designs/documentation as required.
  • Researches and selects components to improve cost, reliability, manufacturability and performance.
  • Provides mechanical component engineering support to design, manufacturing, and sustaining teams.
  • Reviews and interprets mechanical drawings, specs, and documentation.
  • Collaborates with suppliers and internal teams to implement DFM solutions.
  • Supports DMSMS activities and implements proactive obsolescence risk measures.

Job description

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS' expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Component Engineer to join our Component Engineering Group located in Rancho Bernardo, CA, reporting directly to the Component Engineering Manager. This role will have accountability for Component approval and BOM analysis.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Selects, qualifies, and manages mechanical and electromechanical components used in product designs.
  • Serves as a key interface between mechanical design engineering, procurement, and manufacturing to ensure parts are reliable, cost effective, available, and compliant with applicable regulations and standards.
  • Owns and maintains the mechanical portion of the Approved Manufacturer List (AML) and associated part specifications, ensuring selected components meet environmental and ethical requirements.
  • Performs lifecycle and obsolescence management for mechanical components: monitors availability, uses BOM analysis tools, identifies alternates, and mitigates supply chain risk.
  • Sources mechanical components for existing and new products and identifies replacements for obsolete parts, updating designs and documentation as required.
  • Researches and selects mechanical components to improve cost, reliability, manufacturability, and performance of existing and new designs.
  • Provides mechanical component engineering support to design, manufacturing, and sustaining engineering teams.
  • Reviews and interprets mechanical drawings, specifications, and other technical documentation related to components and assemblies.
  • Collaborates with suppliers and internal manufacturing teams to develop and implement Design for Manufacturing (DFM) solutions.
  • Supports DMSMS (Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages) activities for mechanical components and implements proactive measures to reduce obsolescence risk.

Job Qualifications
  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Familiarity and experience with sourcing issues for electronic and mechanical components
  • Experience with BOM obsolescence analysis tools.
  • Complete understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts.
  • Strong communication, computer, documentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in a hardware manufacturing environment, supporting, and sustaining manufacturing engineering.
  • Must be customer focused and able to work on a self-initiated basis or in a team environment and able to work extended hours and travel as required.
