Job Summary

General Atomics (GA) and its affiliated companies are a leading resource for high‑technology system development across a range of domains, including the nuclear fuel cycle, remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless, and laser technologies.

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA‑EMS) designs and manufactures first‑of‑a‑kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems, supporting critical fleet, space systems, missile defense, and industrial customers worldwide.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Electrical Engineer (EE) to join our Electrical Technologies team in Rancho Bernardo. The role focuses on Electrical Circuit and Component Radiation Assurance and Mixed‑Signal PCB assembly design, guiding teams in radiation testing, screening, and qualification, while enabling technical trade studies and supporting the development of laser and electro‑optical sensors, payloads, and other cutting‑edge technology ventures into Defense, “NewSpace,” and related aerospace applications.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work with GA‑EMS engineering staff and chief engineers in the concept development, prototype design, integration, and test of electrical systems and electronics solutions with an emphasis on Circuit and Component Radiation Assurance for space systems products.
  • Exercise considerable latitude in determining technical objectives for reviews, research, designs, and solutions to advanced technical engineering problems.
  • Demonstrate prior experience in improving legacy systems and developing new systems.
  • Generate Circuit and Component Radiation Assurance solutions for new project needs, perform engineering analyses for systems and circuits, document findings, communicate results to engineering and program management staff, give technical presentations, and manage technical effort schedules.
  • Function in an advisory or leadership role as a senior subject matter expert for a project/program and provide planning, direction and oversight to less experienced staff involved in space‑based electrical power and command and data handling electronics.
  • Plan and coordinate the support of engineering solutions including analysis, documentation, reporting, publishing, and making technical and other presentations to ensure viability of the solution(s) in an evolving environment.
  • Plan for future applications of solutions based on new developments in engineering technology.
  • Participate in or may lead the development of new or expand existing business opportunities.
  • Communicate with colleagues and management throughout solution development and deployment cycles.
  • Represent the company as a prime technical contact on contracts and/or projects and interact with external personnel on technical matters requiring coordination between organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.

Qualifications
  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience: twelve or more years with a bachelor’s, ten or more years with a master’s, or seven or more years with a PhD (or equivalent experience).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required.
  • Required experience: Electrical/Electronic/Electromechanical (EEE) parts selection, analysis, screening, qualification, and derating; specification, modeling, simulation, analysis, and engineering design for radiation hardness assurance; demonstrated technical expertise and application of semiconductor physics; analysis, design, and implementation of space hardware systems to include digital, analog, and RF; guiding a design through development and into production.
  • Desired skills (ranked high to low): EEE parts radiation analysis; experience with Systems Tool Kit (formerly Satellite Tool Kit), FastRad, SPENVIS, NOVICE, OMERE, Altium PCB Design Software, PADS PCB Design Software, Atlassian Project Management and Collaboration Tools, Microsoft Project.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.
  • Ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately in an evolving project environment.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and professionals.
  • Capability to represent the organization as a prime technical contact.
  • Customer‑focused and able to formulate plans based on the development of innovative new designs to resolve advanced technical engineering problems.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to prepare and conduct detailed technical presentations and reviews for all levels of management, staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives; experience with government/defense acquisition technical reviews, including SRR, PDR, and CDR, is a plus.
