The City of Battle Creek is seeking an Electrical Apprentice who will work under the Supervisor – WWTP Maintenance to learn and perform essential electrical work. After completing the City’s apprenticeship, the candidate should be prepared to become a Journeyman Electrician.

Responsibilities include installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment, troubleshooting complex systems, and completing reports. Applicants must meet the apprenticeship requirements and hold required licenses.

Description

Performs semiskilled work assisting in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical devices and equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the moderate supervision of the Supervisor – WWTP Maintenance.

Upon completion of the apprenticeship program, an Electrical Apprentice should be able to perform the essential functions of a Journeyman Electrician.

Essential Functions

• Install, maintain, and repair a wide variety of electrical equipment and devices.
• Install, maintain, and repair motors; controls; electrical wiring; and components up to 8.3kV, single and three phase.
• Troubleshoot electrical problems.
• Perform simple and complex electrical and electronic tests.
• Select electrical components and design simple electrical circuits.
• Maintain records and prepare written reports and recommendations on electrical equipment and controls.
• Perform troubleshooting tasks on electronic controls and components.
• Install and maintain electronic devices.
• Perform complex troubleshooting tasks on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and combined motor control and alarm systems.
• Troubleshoot, maintain, install, and repair variable speed motor controllers and Programmable Logic Controllers.
• Layout, cut, bend, threads, assembles and install conduit.
• Soldering and electronic assembly of electronic components.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

• Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan with a valid DOT Medical Card upon hire.
• Complete 8000 hours of training under the City of Battle Creek’s Apprenticeship program over five years.
• Complete 576 hours of formal education under the City of Battle Creek’s Apprenticeship program over five years.
• Hold an active Apprenticeship Card through the State of Michigan.
• Pass State of Michigan Journeyman’s test at the successful completion of the City of Battle Creek’s Apprenticeship program to become a City of Battle Creek Electrical Journeyman.
