Job summary

Carter Machinery seeks an Electric Power Generation (EPG) Applications Engineering Manager - Data Center to lead technical authority and align engineering with sales goals. This role will drive standards, mentor engineers, and coordinate with sales, project teams, and OEMs to deliver reliable, scalable power solutions for data centers across multiple locations in the mid‑Atlantic region.

The ideal candidate has a BS in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering (BSME preferred), a PE license (preferred),

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (BSME preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, preferred.
  • Minimum seven years of experience in power generation or electrical distribution.
  • CAT power systems experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership of application or sales‑support engineering teams.
  • Advanced generator sizing and application engineering.
  • Power systems protection, controls, and integration.
  • Cross‑functional leadership and sales enablement.
  • Coaching, mentoring, and technical decision‑making.
  • Commercial awareness and customer‑facing communication.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and final approval for complex and mission‑critical EPG applications, reinforcing Application Engineers as trusted customer and sales partners.
  • Establish engineering standards, design guidelines, and review processes that ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance across all Application Engineering work.
  • Serve as escalation point for advanced troubleshooting, system integration challenges, and non‑standard applications.
  • Align Application Engineering activities directly to sales objectives, win strategy, and customer value propositions.
  • Partner with Sales Managers to support RFP reviews, technical strategy, proposal risk assessment, and value engineering decisions.
  • Enable Application Engineers to lead technical customer interactions with confidence, ensuring messaging consistency and solution clarity.
  • Ensure smooth transition from sales/application engineering to project execution through standardized handoff processes and clear scope definition.
  • Oversee the quality and timeliness of engineering deliverables including one‑lines, schematics, layouts, and submittals.
  • Collaborate closely with Project Management, Packaging, Service, and Commissioning teams to resolve technical issues and prevent downstream rework.
  • Manage engineering labor utilization, prioritization, and workload balancing to support fast‑paced sales cycles without sacrificing quality.
  • Drive margin improvement by promoting standardized designs, modular solutions, and early technical risk identification.
  • Monitor engineering performance metrics, including rework, warranty‑related issues, and bid support responsiveness.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop Application Engineers with a focus on technical depth, commercial awareness, and customer leadership.
  • Formalize technical training paths, mentoring structures, and knowledge sharing aligned to the Senior / Lead Application Engineer expectations.
  • Build succession pipelines that prepare high‑performing Application Engineers for advanced technical, commercial, or leadership roles.
  • Guide Application Engineering readiness for emerging technologies such as BESS, hybrid systems, microgrids, and energy transition solutions.
  • Coordinate with OEMs, product support, and internal design teams to keep engineering practices current and competitive.
  • Support dealer strategy by ensuring Application Engineers are equipped to lead technical discussions in resiliency and energy markets.
  • Work in coordination with team to achieve Continuous Improvement goals and objectives.
  • Perform various other duties as assigned.

Starting Compensation Range: $130,000 - $170,000 per year

What You Will Do:
Application Engineering Leadership and Technical Authority
  • Provide technical leadership and final approval for complex and mission‑critical EPG applications, reinforcing Application Engineers as trusted customer and sales partners
