Job summary

Xcel Energy is offering an Electrical Distribution Standards internship with the location in St. Paul, MN and Denver, CO. You will support engineers on equipment analysis, standards documentation, and material investigations, while writing white papers and researching alternatives.

The role is based on a hybrid model with in-person commuting to designated sites and up to 40 hours/week in summer. Starting May 24, 2027, the internship may extend beyond the initial term based on performance.

Qualifications

  • Current student, Sophomore or higher.
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university pursuing Electrical Engineering.
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours/week) and part-time during the school year (up to 20 hours/week) in-person per hybrid policy.

Responsibilities

  • Research and write white papers on equipment with technical data such as operations, insulation, and standards compliance.
  • Analyze current equipment for manufacture-equivalent material.
  • Identify multiple sources for functionally equivalent material.
  • Assist Xcel Energy engineers with Design and Construction Manual development.
  • Assist Xcel Energy engineers with faulty material analysis and solution research.

Electric Distribution Standards covers all of the material from the Substation to the meter on the building. Overhead Distribution, Underground Distribution, Underground Network, Outdoor Lighting, and Communication Standards. The standard manuals are what design and construction use to build the electrical distribution system.

This role covers all 8 states that Xcel Energy covers with the physical location in St. Paul, MN and Denver, CO.

Typical intern responsibilities
  • Research and write white papers on equipment with detailed technical information such as number of operations, insulating material, compliance with relevant standards (e.g., IEEE, ASTM, ANSI), physical size for future distribution system (FAN/Grid Modernization)
  • Analyze current equipment for manufacture equivalent material as compared to incumbent materials.
  • Multiple sources for functionally equivalent material.
  • Assist Xcel Energy engineers with Design and Construction Manual development.
  • Assist Xcel Energy engineers with faulty material analysis and solution research.

This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements
  • Current student, Sophomore or higher
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy
Preferred Qualifications
  • Interest in the energy industry and the future of energy

Non-Bargaining The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $23.10 to $24.60 per hour
