Broken Arrow Public Schools is seeking an EL Assistant to support English Learner students at the Assigned Site/EL Center. The position supports interpreting and translating across classrooms, meetings, and school activities, collaborating with the ELL teacher and staff to facilitate language access and learning.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, with preference for college coursework in core areas and experience with diverse student populations.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpreting and translating in educational settings including classrooms, field trips, meetings, and school events.
  • Coordinate with teachers and staff to meet translation needs during the school day.
  • Assist classroom teachers with translating instruction materials.
  • Tutor students individually or in small groups under ELL teacher guidance.
  • Supervise students during buses, lunchroom, and other areas requiring interpretation services.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with staff and the public.
  • Performs other duties assigned by building principal or ELL teacher.
  • Adapt to scheduling changes and additional assignments related to ELL program needs.

Summary
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provides interpreting and/or translating skills in the educational environment, including classroom, laboratory, field trips, assemblies, academic and social clubs, athletics, evening meetings and programs, parent/teacher conferences, IEP meetings, school produced plays and programs, and any other educational sites/activities deemed appropriate for student learning. Works to equalize the target language with the source language in maximizing the learning situation.
  • Utilizes time before, after and/or during the school day to meet with teachers and staff as deemed appropriate by the building principal, Director of Federal Programs, Federal Programs Specialist, Parent Liaison and/or ELL teacher.
  • Assists classroom teachers with translating instruction materials.
  • Tutors students individually and in small groups under the leadership and direction of the ELL teacher
  • Supervises students entering and exiting buses, on the playground, lunchroom, or any other location where interpreting for students is deemed necessary.
  • Demonstrates professionalism in all interactions with district staff and the public.
  • Assists with other duties assigned by the building principal, Director of Federal Programs, Federal Programs Specialist, Parent Liaison and/or ELL teacher.
  • Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility in regard to student scheduling and staffing needs and in the acceptance of extra assignments related to ELL program needs.
  • Maintains confidentiality standards as set forth by Broken Arrow Public Schools.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Attendance Statement

Able to be in attendance for assigned responsibilities with 95% attendance.

Environmental Conditions

Primarily inside working conditions with regular exposure to outdoor environmental conditions. Some outside duty assignments required with exposure to pollen, heat, cold, wind, humidity or other weather conditions.

Physical Standards
  • Ability to lift/carry and manipulate objects and supplies of up to 10 lbs for up to 50 feet is frequently required; ability to lift/carry objects of 11-24 pounds for up to 50 feet is occasionally required
  • Standing in place for short periods of time
  • Walking as required to access equipment and perform responsibilities
  • Sitting as required to complete tasks
  • Use of hands to do fine finger work as in operating a computer
  • Strong hand-eye coordination
  • Talking and hearing as to communicate concerning job-related duties as assigned and communicate via telephone
  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less) with or without correction
