READS Collaborative in Norton, MA seeks an EIPA-certified Educational American Sign Language Interpreter to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing students across grades. The role requires MA licensure, ASL fluency, and collaboration with teachers and specialists within the DHH program.

The position is full-time, based in Middleboro/Norton area schools, with salary range $51,503–$67,771 per year, as per READS ESP Unit guidelines. Some travel between locations and meetings is expected.

Qualifications

• Completion of the Educational Interpreter Proficiency Assessment (EIPA) including both performance and written components as required by DESE/MCDHH.
• EIPA performance score achieved for both performance and written portions as determined by DESE/MCDHH.
• Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
• Massachusetts licensure required for educational interpreting.
• Experience with students from elementary to high school preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide educational interpreting services within all assigned grade levels, classes and meetings as determined by the DHH administrator.
• Interpret or transliterate in a mode reflecting the student’s language use as outlined in the IEP.
• Support language development and accessibility for deaf/hard of hearing students.
• Collaborate with classroom teachers to adapt activities to promote participation.
• Attend and participate in required meetings and Parent Conferences as requested.
• Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries within the educational team.

Job Description

This position is located in the READS Collaborative Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program in Norton, MA.

Qualifications

• REQUIRED! Completion of the Educational Interpreter Proficiency Assessment (EIPA); both performance and written as required by DESE/MCDHH.
• REQUIRED! Achieved the performance score on the EIPA, for both performance & written, as determined by DESE/MCDHH.
• REQUIRED! Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
• Licensure in Massachusetts
• Prior experience working with students, ranging from elementary to high school levels preferred
• Basic understanding of child development as well as language development, or willingness to learn
• Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary educational team on matters regarding interpreting and communication
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Any additions/changes to the above, qualifications as deemed appropriate by READS Board of Directors

Additional

• Model social strategies to encourage interaction between individuals who use sign language and those who do not
• Ensure incidental information is interpreted
• Maintain confidentiality – information is only shared within the educational team
• Maintain professional boundaries, respect privacy of students and foster independent student learning
• Conduct oneself appropriate to the academic setting
• Prepare for classroom academic content, including previewing text books, teacher's lesson plans or electronic presentation of material
• Provide academic support as outlined in the IEP under the guidance of a certified teacher
• Provide sign language support to classmates of the student who is deaf or hard of hearing
• Attend and participate in any meetings which you are requested to attend.
• Attend Parent Conferences and Parents' Night activities as requested.
• Contribute as a member of a team
• Any additional responsibilities as determined by the Program Administrator.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, families, and host school personnel. Must be capable of independently implementing student interventions under the direction of the classroom teacher, counselor, specialists, or program director. Must be able to respond promptly to calls for assistance throughout the school building and surrounding areas. Must have reliable transportation and the ability to travel to various locations as required to perform assigned duties.

The employee must be physically capable of performing all essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Physical demands may include standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, and assisting with the physical management of students. The position also requires the ability to safely implement approved physical intervention and restraint techniques, when necessary, with students up to age 22, in accordance with READS Collaborative policies, training, and applicable state regulations.

Terms of Employment
