Job summary

Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks a Deputy Technical Director to lead the technical execution of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) project. You will supervise the Systems Engineering organization, drive design convergence, and coordinate with Brookhaven, Jefferson Lab, partner labs, and international collaborators to ensure readiness and compliance with DOE standards.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in engineering, physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Twelve (12) years of related experience, including at least eight (8) years of progressively responsible technical leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of particle accelerators, colliders, and all associated technologies.
  • Experience coordinating and/or leading international multidisciplinary teams and technical activities across multiple organizations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of design, technical risk management, and project execution for complex facilities.
  • Excellent presentation, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, motivate, direct, and lead a diverse group of personnel.
  • Commitment to working safely, ethics, and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and set the overall technical vision, strategy, and direction for the EIC project.
  • Provide technical leadership for design, integration, construction, installation, commissioning, and readiness of the EIC Project.
  • Direct and oversee the EIC Systems Engineering organization and staff.
  • Oversee project technical reviews to ensure DOE compliance and standards.
  • Facilitate cross-system integration and manage interfaces across subsystems.
  • Maintain the technical baseline through systems engineering and configuration management.
  • Identify and resolve technical risks in collaboration with leadership and teams.
  • Coordinate activities among labs, partner institutions, and international collaborators.
  • Support preparation for DOE reviews, including Critical Decisions and readiness reviews.
  • Serve on the EIC Change Control Board and advise on engineering changes.
  • Provide leadership input to project cost, schedule, and performance reporting.
  • Represent the Technical Director in project reviews and external meetings; act on behalf when required.
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing culture.
