Job summary

Tri-State Drilling, LLC is seeking an EHS Specialist to provide field and project safety support across divisions. You will work with EHST leadership and site teams to identify hazards, plan safely, and remove barriers to safe completion of work.

Qualifications

• 1-5+ years of progressive safety experience in heavy civil, industrial, or foundation drilling / deep foundations.

• Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation) and proficiency with EHST tools like Microsoft Teams and Excel.

The EHS Specialist spends significant time in the field assisting with hazard identification, project planning, supporting training initiatives, conducting observations and inspections, and helping project teams remove barriers to safely completing work. This is a home office and field based position open to candidates across the US, with travel estimated at 50%.

The EHS Specialist spends significant time in the field assisting with hazard identification, project planning, supporting training initiatives, conducting observations and inspections, and helping project teams remove barriers to safely completing work. This position reports to the Lead Regional Safety Manager.

Essential Job Duties And Responsibilities

Operational Integration

• Align safety coverage with project risk, schedule, and crew size; work with Operations and EHST leadership to adjust staffing as needed.
• Support operations for assigned projects to review upcoming work, critical lifts, tie-ins, site constraints; confirm safety planning is in place and understood.
• Collaborate with Operations on non-safety tasks when it helps the project succeed (e.g., logistics, planning support, client communication), while maintaining an independent safety voice.

Field Presence, Observations, and Audits

• Spend substantial time on job sites to understand work phases, changing conditions, and crew dynamics; while completing documented safety observations when on site.
• Focus on Significant Injuries and Fatality (SIF) hazards (line of fire, crane and rig operations, heavy equipment, lifting, fall protection, confined space, energy isolation, etc.).
• Conduct formalized site safety audits throughout the year and capturing audit findings, corrective actions, and due dates; follow up to verify timely close-out.
• Look for system drivers, not just worker errors —identify patterns in planning, supervision, training, tools, or procedures that drive risk.

Foremen and Project Touchpoints

• Conduct weekly reach-outs with Foremen / Front-line leaders for each active projects covering AHA’s, observations, lessons learned, audit results, etc.
• Conduct Safety Check-Ins with non-supervisory employees on a regular basis to gather feedback, identify unreported hazards, near misses, or improvement ideas.

Training, Coaching, and On-Site Support

• Partner with Operations leadership to schedule and deliver on-site training, including orientation refreshers, observation quality and AHA use.
• Task-specific training for high‑risk operations (e.g., rig set‑up, crane work, excavation, fall protection, LOTO, confined space).
• Provide coaching to Superintendents and Foremen on effective Toolbox Talks, safety briefings, writing and reviewing AHAs; and meaningful safety observations and good catch reports.

Compliance and Incident Management

• Ensure assigned projects maintain compliance with company policy and applicable OSHA, DOT, environmental, and client requirements.
• Assist teams with regulatory inspections and client audits; help gather documents, escort inspectors/auditors, and support debriefs.
• Support incident response and investigations by managing serious incidents or near misses and leading investigations.
• Maintain professional, proactive communication with client safety representatives and serve as a resource for joint planning and problem‑solving.

Data and Reporting

• Review reporting data for both leading (observations, good catches, audit results, training status) and lagging indicators (injuries, incidents, near misses) for assigned projects.
• Use data to identify trends and drive proactive interventions with project teams, (VP, PM, Superintendents and Foremen).
• Help develop and implement recovery plans for projects that show declining safety performance or repeated high‑risk behaviors.

Qualifications

Required

• 1-5+ years of progressive safety experience in heavy civil, industrial, or foundation drilling / deep foundations.
• Understanding of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 and other safety standards.
• Demonstrated ability to influence and coach Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and craft workers.
• Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation) and strong proficiency with Microsoft Teams, Excel, and other EHST systems.
• Ability and willingness to travel frequently, estimated at 50%.
• Demonstrate flexibility to meet operational needs, including short‑notice mobilizations, night/weekend visits, and non‑routine support when required.

Preferred

• Bachelor’s or Associates degree in EHS, Construction Management, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and field experience.
• Professional certification preferred (e.g., CHST, CSP, OHST, CUSP or equivalent) or willingness to obtain within an agreed timeframe.
• Strong working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 (especially Subpart P, Subpart CC, Subpart M, etc.), applicable MSHA/OSHA General Industry standards, and relevant state / client requirements.

Work Environment

• Regular exposure to active construction and foundation drilling sites with heavy equipment, cranes, rigs, noise, dust, weather extremes, and uneven terrain.
• Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, climb access systems and ladders, and use required PPE.

The expected pay range for this position is $70,000 – $100,000. Offers are based on various factors, including skill set, qualifications, experience, location, and other job‑related reasons.
