About The Position

As an EHS Specialist II you will be responsible for identifying gaps to regulatory and company standards, while working with the facility teams to incorporate necessary improvements and solutions. This role will primarily be on site at facilities, providing support and measurement against EHS policy and regulations. This position requires experience in applicable skills and practical knowledge to perform responsibilities with minimal support.

Key Responsibilities
  • For assigned region and facilities, maintain and ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state and local Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) regulations. This includes facility permits and any relevant data collection or reporting and supports facilities in regulatory inspections, follow up and action item tracking to resolution.
  • Provides a strong field presence for EHS issues, reviewing activities against procedures and policy. Provide coaching and assimilate into the site culture to understand operations, positively impact safety as a core value, and to build trust.
  • Administer education and training of EHS programs to facilities. Support EHS on-boarding of new employees and contractors at assigned facilities.
  • Mentor/coach supervisors and employees in EHS requirements and tools; including Life Critical Policies and programs, hazard identification, inspections of facilities, and EHS management systems.
  • Ensure databases, including Benchmark, are maintained with accuracy and up-to-date information. This person monitors and holds facility staff accountable for keeping data and reporting compliant per the company’s EHS programs.
  • Utilizes effective communication protocols, including standardized methods, to keep stakeholders informed of all required information.
  • Schedule and attend (or assist in facilitating) required inspections and employee testing. Review resulting documentation to assure noted issues are clear, concise, and tracked to resolution.
  • Measure facilities against agency regulations and company programs. This includes Life Critical Policy (LCP), OSHA/EPA/other regulatory requirements, training, risk ranking, and other defined EHS programs.
  • Lead incident investigations and provide support for immediate incident management. Lead root cause analysis or Learning from Incident (LFI) to determine appropriate corrective actions. Assist in tracking improvement actions though implementation.
  • Understanding of dust hazard assessments (DHA), permitting, reporting, and other EHS requirements specific to facilities assigned.
  • Knowledge in Process Safety Management (PSM) and/or Risk Management Plan (RMP) is required if supporting facilities covered by these regulations.
  • Collaborate with the EHS team and other departments while maintaining clear communication with operations leaders and direct manager. Maintain a positive working relationships at facilities and all levels to perform duties effectively
  • Involvement in contractor management, including vendor qualification and auditing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that are not specifically detailed above.
What is expected of you and others at this level
  • Performs work under general supervision and is typically a mid-level (intermediate) EHS professional
  • Possess a solid working level knowledge of EHS subjects and functions as a EHS Generalist for EHS support.
  • Manages moderately complex EHS issues/problems and escalates complex issues to higher level staff.
  • You will be based at a facility as your primary support location and be expected to travel to other assigned locations at a frequency agreed upon with manager. Travel expectation (overnight stays) up to 50% when assigned other locations.
  • Performs duties listed under responsibilities independently while providing measurable progress.
  • Uses existing solutions to resolve complex issues
  • Intermediate knowledge and experience in own discipline; still acquiring higher level knowledge and skills
  • Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures
  • Receives a moderate level of guidance and direction
  • Comfortably and effectively present/speak in front of groups.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in EHS or engineering field required
  • Discipline related certifications and focused subject matter training
  • Experience and education should be consistent with duties to be performed
  • 4+ years’ relevant EHS experience required. Agriculture industry experience preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software
Physical Requirements And Working Environment
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer
  • You must be able to climb stairs and ladders and be comfortable working at heights. Must be able to work in outdoor conditions. The position may also be exposed to various agronomy chemicals including anhydrous ammonia as well as airborne dusts and grain dusts.
  • Employees may need to regularly lift up to 25 pounds and frequently up to 50 pounds.
  • This position is required to access all locations of the facility to properly perform audits and assess activities performed by employees.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
