Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health is seeking a Per Diem Electroencephalography Technologist to perform routine EEGs at the patient bedside across the hospital. You will log on remotely to review pending EEGs, establish a work plan, obtain patient cooperation, and perform electrode placement using the 10/20 system.

The role requires the ability to work independently, manage potentially combative patients, and communicate effectively with physicians.

Qualifications

  • CAAHEP-accredited ENDT program or higher degree is preferred.
  • Ability to manage severely ill patients and move equipment safely.
  • Physical stamina to perform repetitive electrode placement and testing.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine EEGs at the patient bedside across the hospital.
  • Log on remotely to check patient EEGs at start of day and plan priorities.
  • Explain procedures to patients and gain cooperation for optimal studies.
  • Calibrate EEG instrument and apply electrodes using 10/20 placement.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and ensure artifact-free recordings.
  • Observe and report findings to physicians; coordinate with Neurologist on call.
  • Enter patient billing information daily and notify Neurologist on completion.
  • Archive studies and prepare copies for Medical Records as needed.
  • Coordinate with Biomedical engineering or IT for equipment issues.
  • Order and stock supplies and maintain professional rapport with staff.
  • Work independently while adhering to OSHA, JCAHO, and hospital policies.
  • Participate in Hospital Quality Assurance and Safety programs.

Per Diem; varied hours/shifts according to operational needs. Minimum shift requirement per CBA.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Performs routine EEGs on the in- patients at their bedside throughout the Hospital.
  • Log on remotely at the start of the day to see how many patients have pending EEGs.
  • Establish a work plan and priorities. (If concerns arise lacking clear precedent then this would be reviewed with the Neurologist on call for that day or the Nursing Manager. (There may be one to four EEGs in a day).
  • Explain the procedure to the patient and obtain the patient’s cooperation for the best performance of the study.
  • Performs the appropriate calibration procedure on the EEG instrument for standard recordings.
  • Measures and applies electrodes using standard 10/20 placement.
  • Understands basic troubleshooting of the equipment to provide artifact free recordings.
  • Be able to make discriminating observations and follow-up with physicians if indicated during a recording.
  • Enter patient billing information into the database system at the end of each day.
  • Notify the Neurologist before leaving the hospital at the completion of the day.
  • Archive studies, and may make copies for Medical Records when asked to do so.
  • Contact Biomedical engineering or the IT dept. with any equipment malfunctions.
  • Order and stock supplies.
  • The technologist is working independently, maturity and ability to establish good rapport with patients, public and staff.
  • The technologist may work with combative patients and must be aware of the possibility of injury.
  • Conforms to all policy and procedures regarding OSHA, JCAHO, and hospital regulations.
  • Participates in Hospital Quality Assurance and Safety programs.
Education/Experience Required
  • Graduate from a Commission on Accreditation Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) accredited ENDT program or an Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university is desired
  • Capacity to deal with severely ill patients.
  • Physically able to assist with movement of patients and testing equipment.
Registration/Certification
  • Credentialed as a Registered Electroencephalography Technologist (R. EEG T.) or board eligible by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET)
  • Current AHA BLS certification.
Physical/Environmental Requirements

This job requires frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking and lifting over 10 lbs. There will be occasional need for climbing stairs, lifting in excess of 50 – 100 lbs and sitting. Constant use of hearing, sight and speech. Frequent use of smell and touch. Frequent keyboard and telephone use. Constant concentration and problem solving.

Pay Range

$26.47 - $47.59

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. The pay range for this position is established and governed by the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Employees hired into this position will receive compensation consistent with the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
