Job summary

Missouri Department of Corrections is seeking a qualified educator to teach adults in a maximum-security setting. You will follow the state-approved course of study while using ingenuity and flexibility to fit pupils’ needs.

As part of the teaching team, you will develop and evaluate plans, maintain records, deliver offender programming (cognitive behavior, financial literacy, workforce skills), and participate in conferences. A current DESE teaching certificate or eligibility is required.

Qualifications

  • Current teaching certificate issued by the Missouri DESE, OR eligible to obtain it.
  • Experience teaching adults in a correctional or educational setting preferred.
  • Ability to adapt instruction to diverse learner needs and backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Teach subject matter to adult offenders appropriate to educational background and certification by the Missouri DESE.
  • Adhere to the state-approved course of study while adapting to pupil needs.
  • Plans/outlines classwork, prepares materials, and maintains records.
  • Confer with students regarding progress and provide instruction and encouragement.
  • Deliver offender programming including cognitive behavior, financial literacy, workforce skills.
  • Receives supervision from Education Supervisor or administrator.

Job description

The annual salary listed for this position includes the additional $1.50 per hour maximum security differential ($3,120 annually) for all full-time positions domiciled in a maximum-security institution.

  • Plans/outlines classwork within prescribed limits; prepares materials for special study
  • As part of the teaching team: develops/implements/evaluates plans; participates in teacher conferences/meetings/educational research projects; maintains scholastic/attendance records; orders supplies
  • Confers with students regarding needs/progress/abilities and provides instruction and encouragement as needed
  • Delivering offender programming to include but not limited to cognitive behavior, financial literacy, workforce skills, etc.
  • Receives general supervision from Education Supervisor or designated administrator.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Current teaching certificate issued by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), OR meet the eligibility requirements for, and be willing to obtain, a Missouri DESE Teaching Certificate.

All requested documents MUST be received by the closing date listed.

Contingent upon your position, you may also be eligible to receive:

  • A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (i.e. institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
  • A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing differential if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.

The Department of Corrections currently offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years! If you are transferring from another State of Missouri agency and are receiving state retention pay, please be advised that the Missouri Department of Corrections administers retention based upon your retention anniversary date. As a result, your retention pay upon transfer may differ from what you were receiving at your previous agency until you reach your applicable retention anniversary date.
