Job summary

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks a dynamic and engaging educator to facilitate school tours for TK–12th grade students. Part-time Educators lead inquiry-based tours in the Skirball’s exhibitions on Jewish culture and history, immigration, and archaeology, as well as in the Noah’s Ark exhibition.

The role uses scripted content and interactive strategies including object-based learning, storytelling, puppetry, movement, music, and artmaking to create student-centered experiences.

Qualifications

  • Experience teaching or leading interactive programs for TK–12 students.
  • Background in museum education, storytelling, theater, puppetry, music, archaeology, or related fields.
  • Strong public speaking and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to engage students of different ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead interactive, inquiry-based experiences for students and families, indoors and outside, using movement, storytelling, music, puppetry, and hands-on activities.
  • Prepare tour materials, organize supplies, and supervise students during lunch on campus.
  • Collaborate with educators and Skirball team to create a welcoming environment.
  • Help maintain gallery spaces by resetting materials and ensuring safety and organization.
  • Participate in ongoing training and apply feedback to improve teaching skills.
  • Support Education and Family Programs with various tasks as assigned.

Job description

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks a dynamic and engaging educator to facilitate school tours for TK – 12th grade students. Part-Time Educators lead inquiry-based tours in the Skirball’s exhibitions on Jewish culture and history, immigration, and archaeology, as well as in the award-winning Noah’s Ark exhibition.

Position Overview

Part-time Educators use scripted tour content and interactive teaching strategies including object-based learning, visual thinking strategies, storytelling, puppetry, movement, music, cooperative games, and artmaking to create student-centered learning experiences. Programs for students focus on themes of community building, collaboration, immigration, family stories, identity, and more. This role is ideal for educators passionate about working with students in a museum setting and creating joyful, interactive experiences. This position reports to the Manager of Education Programs.

Rate: $21 per hour

Schedule:

This is a 24-28 hour per week, in-person position. Shifts for this position require availability in the mornings to facilitate school tours (Tuesday-Friday) and a commitment to an 8-hour shift on Saturdays to support family learning in Noah’s Ark.

  • Tuesday, 8:45 am– 5:15 pm
  • Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:45 am – 12:45 pm
  • Saturdays, 9:00 am – 5:30 pm

Includes 2-4 hours per week for school tour preparation, team meetings, and occasional off-site workshops. The schedule is based on program needs and applicant availability.

  • Lead interactive, inquiry-based experiences for students and families, indoors and outside, using movement, storytelling, music, puppetry, and hands-on activities.
  • Support Education programs by preparing tour materials, organizing supplies, and supervising students during lunch on campus at the Skirball.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow educators and Skirball team members to create a welcoming, inclusive environment.
  • Help maintain gallery spaces by resetting material and ensuring safety, cleanliness, and organization.
  • Participate in ongoing training and apply feedback from supervisors and content specialists to enhance and refine gallery-based teaching skills.
  • Commitment to a respectful, supportive team culture; collaborate with colleagues and supervisors with kindness and professionalism, fostering trust, welcoming interactions, and constructive responses to feedback
  • Support the Education and Family Programs team with a variety of tasks, as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience teaching or leading interactive programs for TK- Grade 12 students, ideally in a museum, formal or informal education setting.
  • Background in museum education, early childhood education, storytelling, theater, puppetry, music, archaeology, or related fields.
  • Strong public speaking and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to engage students of different ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
  • A warm, kind, welcoming, and professional demeanor.
  • A team player with a professional, positive attitude.
  • Physical ability to lead active programs, including kneeling, crouching, lifting, and working outdoors.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, highly sensory environment while maintaining composure and visitor focus.
  • Proven ability to exercise good judgment, take initiative, and manage a changing and varied workload.
  • An active interest in the Skirball Cultural Center’s mission and essential Jewish values.
  • Interest in Jewish culture and history (prior knowledge is a plus but not required).
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required.
