Job summary

The Illinois Association of School Administrators seeks a full-time paraprofessional/interpreter to support deaf/hard of hearing and non-verbal students in regular and special education classrooms. The role collaborates with the IEP team under the direction of the Director of Special Services/Administration.

Responsibilities include providing interpreter services, assessing comprehension, and using ASL, Signed English, and finger spelling to facilitate classroom communication.

Qualifications

• Must meet ISBE and NCLB requirements for paraprofessionals.
• Must be highly dependable with regard to regular work attendance and punctual arrival.
• Must work effectively with students, staff, and parents.
• Must possess the level of personal fitness sufficient to participate in Safe therapeutic physical restraints under trained staff.

Responsibilities

• Provide interpreter services for deaf/hard of hearing and/or non-verbal students in educational and social settings.
• Assess the comprehension of the communication and encourage students to ask for assistance when needed.
• Explain concepts within the interpretation when possible and foster student participation in lessons.
• Maintain contact with the special education teacher about issues requiring parent contact.
• Communicate with others using ASL, finger spelling, Signed English, or other modes as appropriate.
• Assist in creating a safe and inclusive environment to support student independence.
