Job summary

Job Description

Job Title: Educational Interpreter

General Description: Provides services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in a variety of settings, including (but not limited to) academic classes, meetings, assemblies, and other activities.

Requirements:

• Holds a valid Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III or a passing score on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Written Test along with a minimum of a Level 3.5 on the EIPA Performance Test or any other state qualification or national certification (excluding Certificate of Deaf Interpretation) recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH) as equivalent to or exceeding the VQAS Level III.

Reports To: Principal

Essential Job Functions:

• Facilitates communication between the student with hearing loss, school staff, and other students.
• Interprets and translates all classroom discussions, conversations, and school activities.
• Interprets and translates all teacher/speaker's messages.
• Facilitates voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice communication
• Learns signs and/or cues for special vocabulary prior to need.
• Meets with students to discuss new signs and/or cues for special class-related vocabulary.
• Restates the message of persons who are deaf or hard of hearing who may cue when they talk
• Silently repeats what a person who is hearing says in a manner that enables the person who is deaf or hard of hearing to understand it.
• Restates what a person who is deaf or hard of hearing says for those who are hearing
• Fosters independence in students by directing the student to the teacher when the student has questions.
• Other duties, as assigned.
