Position Description

Under the direction and guidance of special education administrative staff, the Educational Interpreter, Lead ensures the provision of high-quality interpreting services for deaf or hard‑of‑hearing students within an educational setting. This role also involves managing interpreter schedules, providing guidance and support to interpreters, coordinating interpreter assignments, and collaborating with school administration and staff to promote accessibility and inclusion for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. The Educational Interpreter, Lead will also be assigned a student caseload to provide communication facilitation between students who are deaf or hard of hearing, and others, in an educational setting and for other school‑related activities.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide training regarding the role of the interpreter in the educational setting for site administrators and staff members.
  • Provide new HCS interpreters with an in‑service that includes state and division policies/guidelines and the Code of Conduct for Educational Interpreters.
  • Serve as an informational resource to school staff and parents regarding students who are deaf or hard of hearing and related issues.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, and other professionals to plan and implement effective strategies for supporting students with hearing impairments.
  • Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and other planning sessions to address students' unique needs and develop appropriate accommodations and modifications.
  • Coordinate interpreter needs when interpreters are absent and provide interpreters at events such as parent conferences, extracurricular activities, meetings, etc.
  • Assist administrators with observation/evaluations of interpreters and provide support for skill development.
  • Stay informed about developments in deaf education, sign language interpreting, and related fields (VDOE regulations and VDDHH policies) through professional development activities, workshops, and conferences.
  • Disseminate relevant information to interpreters and other appropriate staff members.
  • Respect confidentiality in all areas of interpreting/transliterating assignments.
  • Foster independence in students by directing the student to the teacher when the student has questions.
  • Strive to maintain high professional standards in compliance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance at work.
Job Requirements
  • High School Diploma required; Associate Degree or higher preferred.
  • Successful completion of a passing score on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Written Test along with a minimum of a Level 3.5 on the EIPA Performance Test or any other state qualification or national certification (excluding Certificate of Deaf Interpretation) recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as equivalent to or exceeding the VQAS Level III.
  • Must possess fluency in sign language, strong communication skills, and a deep understanding of educational concepts to effectively support the academic success and social integration of students with hearing impairments.
  • Thorough knowledge of sign language methods and procedures; general knowledge of classroom procedures and instruction programs.
  • Ability to sign accurately and rapidly process information for extended periods.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Ability to work independently without direct guidance or supervision.
  • Must use sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact as defined by the ability to see, read, talk, and hear.
  • May require long periods of standing and significant use of hands and upper body.
  • Work is subject to tight and changing schedules, may require serving the needs of several students simultaneously, and requires own transportation to travel between schools.
