Responsibilities

  • Be physically present on campus according to work schedule.
  • Abide by NMIS policies, handbook, and NM Statutes.
  • Enforce NMIS and community policies and directives from Family Handbook.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and family information.
  • Maintain a standard of care appropriate to student maturity.
  • Support student learning as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist with clerical teacher duties.
  • Provide safe supervision before, during, and after school.
  • Cover classes when substitute teacher is not available.
  • Work with small groups as directed.
  • Monitor student activity per IEP and school policies.
  • Display desire to work with students and respond to individuals.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress.
  • Be proactive in classroom management and uphold discipline policy.
  • Assist in Functional Behavior Assessments as directed.
  • Provide specialized physical assistance for students with IEP/504 plans.
  • Use diverse techniques to maximize outcomes.
  • Participate in grade-level and staff meetings and professional development.
  • Attend NMIS community events as directed.

Job Description

Educational Assistant - Part-time 0.6FTE (three days/24 hours per week)

Summary of position: This employee is responsible for assisting special education teachers in lesson planning, delivery as well as classroom and playground supervision.

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

School Personnel Act Classification: Licensed

Contracted or "at-will" employment: Contracted

Immediate supervisor: Special Education teacher

Compensation: Hourly wages, according to placement on NMIS Educational Assistant Pay Scale, see Appendix 2 .

Hours: Full-time employees must be present on campus 7:45 - 3:45 M-F minus 30 minute unpaid lunch daily; not to exceed 40 hours/week minus 30 minute lunch daily, per dates shown on annual NMIS Instructional Calendar. Part-time employees will have varied on-campus required hours/days proportional to their full time equivalency as agreed upon between administrator and employee.

Receives Paid Personal Leave under NMIS Policy: Yes

Certification/Educational Qualifications:

  • Possess a current NMPED issued Educational Assistant License
  • Current trainings in accordance with this Employee Handbook and GC Policy (e.g. Bloodborne Pathogens, etc.)
  • Current background check in compliance with school policy.

Physical/Mental Qualifications

  • Be able to lift and carry 30 pounds.
  • Be able to stand for 30 consecutive minutes.
  • Be able to safely and effectively supervise groups of students in varied conditions, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Be fluent in English and Spanish, if placed in bilingual assignment

Job Duties

  • Be physically present on campus according to work schedule.
  • Abide by all NMIS school policies procedures, NMIS Employee Handbook, and relevant sections of New Mexico Statute (NMSA) and code (NMAC).
  • Enforce all NMIS student policies and community policies and directives found in Family Handbook.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and family information.
  • Maintain a standard of care appropriate for the maturity level of students under supervision.
  • Support student learning in any way deemed appropriate by the teacher.
  • Assist with clerical teacher duties.
  • Provide safe and effective supervision of students before, during, and after school in a variety of settings, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Cover classes when substitute teacher is not available.
  • Work with small groups at teacher discretion.
  • Monitor and direct student activity in accordance with the student's IEP (when applicable), and the school's policies and procedures.
  • Display desire to work with students and responds to students as individuals.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress.
  • Be proactive and diligent in classroom management strategies and uphold the discipline policy of NMIS.
  • Assist in conducting Functional Behavior Assessments as directed by school administration.
  • Provide specialized physical assistance as needed to students with Individualized Education Plans or Section 504 Plans.
  • Utilize a diverse array of techniques and modalities in order to maximize a student's academic and personal outcomes.
  • Participate regularly in grade level and staff meetings. Such meetings may extend beyond on-campus required hours.
  • Participate in school-provided professional development sessions, as required. Such sessions may extend beyond on-campus required hours.
  • Attend NMIS community events as directed by school administration, that may be on- or off-campus and may extend beyond on-campus required hours.

Additional functions:

  • Participate in school-provided professional development sessions, as required. Such sessions may extend beyond on-campus required hours.
  • Attend field trips with classroom and assist to keep children safe while off campus.
  • Work collaborative with all staff members
  • Attend NMIS community events as directed by school administration, that may be on- or off-campus and may extend beyond on-campus required hours.
  • Other duties as assigned by Special Education Director.

Position Type: Full-Time
Salary: $28,800 to $35,200 Per Year
