Job Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (approximately 30 hours per week) Education Program Assistant 2: Food Safety and Preservation Program position for the Division of Extension and Engagement’s Family and Community Health ( FCH ) Program at Oregon State University ( OSU ). This position is located in Roseburg, Oregon.

This Education Program Assistant 2 (EPA2) position serves the Douglas County and is based at the OSU Division of Extension and Engagement’s Extension Service office in Roseburg, Oregon. This position is with the Extension Family and Community Health ( FCH ) program, affiliated with OSU College of Health.

The EPA2 will:

• offer programs and classes that promote healthy eating habits and physically active lifestyles to individuals and families;
• develop programs and collaborative community partnerships independently. Initiate program changes with the input of state and county program coordinators;
• work with community partners like schools, food banks and pantries, and other non-profit organizations. This will require driving/travel to various county sites to deliver programming.
• provide coordination for regional food security and safety outreach and for the OSU Extension Master Food Preserver ( MFP ) program
• provide lead work to volunteers who have various identities, cultural backgrounds, and communication styles and expectations; and
• be part of FCH Program team, supervised by the FCH unit managing faculty.

This EPA2 assists the FCH managing faculty with designing, developing, maintaining and/or carrying out educational programming and outreach activities to serve broad and diverse populations in an accessible, inclusive, equitable, and socially just manner. This includes complying with Civil Rights and Language/Visual Access regulations.

The division has built the capacity and expectation for employees to use digital communications and technologies in the modern-day workplace. This reflects our demonstrable commitment to using digital communications tools and changing technologies as a primary way to raise Oregonian’s awareness of and engagement with our organization, programs and resources. This EPA works with the managing faculty member to create opportunities to enhance access, inclusion, and relevant best practices, using digital communications and technologies where appropriate.

Key Responsibilities

Nutrition Education Delivery

85% – Community Food Security and Safety Program Assistance and Delivery

• Deliver engaging workshops and short courses that increase knowledge, skills, and participation in local food production and preservation. Travel is required to deliver educational programming and services throughout Douglas County.
• Coordinate with the Food Security and Safety program team to select educational resources, activities, and handouts designed for youth, adults and/or families, following OSU Extension Service guidelines.
• Work independently to deliver educational non-credit programs using OSU Extension Service approved curricula, materials and information. Develop written materials and activities to supplement curriculum as requested. Initiate program changes with the input of state and county program coordinators.
• Verify group/class set up and food security/preservation topics/lessons with site contact, preparation and ordering of instructional and marketing supplies needed for classes.
• Assist with the coordination and training of community and program volunteers.
• Assemble materials needed for classes and other education activities. Purchase appropriate materials for educational activities, including ingredients for food preparation and tasting.
• Collaborate with managing faculty to create accessible and inclusive environments that make space for a range of learner needs and provide reasonable accommodations.
• Assist the managing faculty with enhancing access, inclusion, and relevant best practices and include these activities in the quarterly and annual reports.

Outreach and engagement

• Develop collaborative community partnerships independently. Collaborate with faculty to determine overall program goals and objectives.
• Collaborate with community groups and partner organizations to recruit and engage broad and diverse audiences in food security programming.
• Engage community partners, volunteers and community members in a culturally responsive manner.
• Support events hosted by local food system partners that hold potential to connect new audiences with Extension programs.
• Assess community informational needs and disseminate reliable information through a wide variety of communication streams, including traditional media, social media, events, and workshops.
• Provide support for Food Security and Safety volunteers as needed to implement educational programs.
• Assist with the development of active programs for updating and re-certifying experienced Master Food Preservers.

Communications

• Facilitate effective communication with key stakeholders and the general public to promote programs, market Extension and increase support for Extension programs.
• Act as the point person for coordinating answers to clientele questions concerning food security and safety.
• Collaborate with managing faculty to use technology to develop marketing strategies and utilize appropriate print and digital tools to reach intended audience segments.
• Participate and actively use Ask Extension program.

Supervision/Leadwork

• Oversight of MFP volunteers.
• Provide leadwork to student workers and interns.

10% – Program Records

Record-keeping: Maintain class, meeting, training and assessment records, attendance records, evaluation data, and paperwork; verify for accuracy; submit all required records upon completion of classes, meetings, trainings and assessments for state and federal reporting.

Maintain record of work contacts, personal vehicle mileage for work travel, supplies purchased; other data/statistical information/records as requested.

5% – Meetings & Trainings and Other Duties

Attend scheduled Nutrition Education meetings and trainings. Participate in relevant statewide/regional conferences, workshops, meetings and trainings. Attend County Extension staff meetings and participates in regional/state OSU Extension Service activities, as directed.

Follow OSU and division brand guidelines, digital publishing standards and digital contact management data integrity practices for programmatic communications, marketing and engagement.

Attend training opportunities to build basic knowledge and consistent skills to use digital communications, marketing and engagement technologies relevant to position duties.

Complete the division’s civil rights training session(s) and assist the managing faculty with coordinating the completion by volunteers.

Perform other duties as assigned.

What We Require

Associate’s Degree and three years of work experience (paid or volunteer) supporting community programs that serve children, youth or adults OR Bachelor’s Degree and one year of work experience (paid or volunteer) one year of which must be working in youth development programs, adult education, teaching, program delivery or related functions OR Five years experience in a field related to the duties of the position AND a high school diploma or equivalent. AND Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated skill to work with diverse audiences. Demonstrated skill to use computers for word processing, data management, and communications.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Access to a vehicle is necessary as duties will require driving/travel to various sites in Douglas County to deliver non-credit programs and transporting curriculum materials. Flexibility to perform work in a variety of office and work settings. Evenings and weekends may be required based on programming needs, coordinating with supervisor to adapt work schedule to address community programming needs.
