Job summary

The Seattle Times Education Lab seeks an experienced reporter to focus on early childhood and elementary education, joining a team dedicated to equity journalism and community engagement.

You will investigate education access challenges, policy impacts, and family costs, while collaborating with photographers and graphics teams to tell complex stories in a clear, engaging way for readers across the Pacific Northwest.

Qualifications

• A minimum of four years’ reporting experience, preferably at a metropolitan daily news organization.
• You should have at least a year with a specific emphasis on education or state and federal government.
• College graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

• Develop a diverse story list on early childhood to K-12 education.
• File public records requests and conduct data-driven investigations.
• Collaborate with photographers and graphics teams to illustrate stories.
• Explain education policy clearly and accessibly for readers.
• Cover education trends and policy impacts at local, state, and federal levels.
• Contribute to equity-focused coverage and engaging community conversations.
