Job summary

The New Yorker in New York, NY is seeking an Editorial Copy Associate to join our agile newsroom. You will proofread, copy-edit and query articles, polish pages, and help ensure accuracy, tone and style across print and digital content.

You will coordinate with editors and writers in a fast-paced setting, optimize headlines for SEO, prepare pieces for publication in our content-management system, and support the team with deadlines, early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

• Some experience as a copy editor, producer, or proofreader.
• Strong editorial instincts, writing skills, and news judgment.
• An eye for detail, an ear for voice.
• Good communication skills.
• Excellent time-management skills.
• The ability to meet deadlines while handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
• The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Comfort learning new editorial systems.
• Experience with a CMS (such as Wordpress) for publishing web content.
• Experience with Google Docs and InCopy.
• Familiarity with The New Yorker’s history, style, and values.
• Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Copy-edit and proofread articles, pages, and related materials for The New Yorker, suggesting editorial improvements to grammar, style, usage, logic, sense, tone, placement, and concision, and spotting typos and bad breaks on final passes.
• Proofread and clean digitized stories from magazine archives, ensuring accuracy after conversion.
• Suggest engaging headlines and display copy, following SEO guidelines and editorial best practices.
• Coordinate with multiple stakeholders to prepare and schedule pieces for publication in The New Yorker’s content-management system.
• Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.
