The El Defensor Chieftain is seeking a community-minded Editor to lead our newsroom. In this role, you will oversee every stage of the editorial process, covering local events and managing the production of the weekly newspaper.

Qualifications

The El Defensor Chieftain is looking for a community-minded Editor to lead our newsroom. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about local news, enjoys building relationships, and thrives in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Responsibilities

As Editor, you'll oversee every stage of the editorial process while serving as the face of the newsroom in the community. Responsibilities include:

• Cover local government meetings, community events, breaking news, and feature stories.
• Research, write, edit, and proofread compelling news content for both print and digital publication.
• Assign stories, manage editorial calendars, establish deadlines, and ensure the timely production of the weekly newspaper.
• Design and lay out the weekly newspaper and coordinate content for publication.
• Manage the newspaper's website and social media channels, publishing stories and engaging with readers.
• Supervise and mentor newsroom staff and interns while fostering a collaborative and professional newsroom culture.
• Build strong relationships with community leaders, organizations, businesses, and readers while serving as a trusted representative of the newspaper.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience preferred.
• Prior experience in journalism, editing, or newsroom leadership.
• Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and news judgment skills.
• Experience with newspaper layout and design software.
• Photography experience preferred.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
• A valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and proof of automobile insurance.
