Job summary

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) is seeking an Editor to join its Test Development team. The Editor collaborates with Exam Developers in the development of exam content, secure computer-based exams and related materials.

The role is based in Philadelphia with a hybrid model allowing three remote days weekly, requiring strong editing skills and familiarity with medical terminology and standards.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years editing experience, ideally in medical editing and test-question development.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and style guidelines.
  • Bachelor's degree required or equivalent years of relevant work experience.

  • Support exam development through question coding, media management and documentation.
  • Maintain exam blueprint integrity and support innovative assessment initiatives.

Job description

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) is currently seeking an Editor to join its Test Development team. The Editor collaborates with Exam Developers in the development of exam content, the development/production of secure, computer‑based exams and all exam‑related material.

Responsibilities
  • Edit and revise exam questions, ensuring alignment with style guidelines, exam standards, and sound question design principles.
  • Proofread items and verify accurate conversion across vendor platforms.
  • Review medical terminology for accuracy, consistency, and clarity, resolving gaps or ambiguities.
  • Prepare materials for item‑writing and approval committee meetings, including drafts, assignments, and media.
  • Participate in committee meetings and maintain independent records of decisions and revisions.
  • Support exam development through question coding, reporting, media management, and documentation.
  • Maintain exam blueprint integrity and support innovative assessment initiatives and item quality control.
Qualifications

We are seeking a detail‑oriented editor with at least 3 years of editing experience, ideally in medical editing and test‑question development. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of medical terminology, standard style manuals, and principles of exam question construction. Experience with HTML or XML is a plus, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office. Bachelor’s degree is required or equivalent years of relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Strong candidates will demonstrate excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise content. They should also bring strong organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving abilities, along with excellent attention to detail. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential for working with colleagues and subject matter experts. The ability to manage multiple priorities, adjust schedules, and meet tight deadlines is critical for success in this role.

This role is based in our offices at 510 Walnut Street, Philadelphia PA, with the ability to work remotely three days a week. Our technology and facility teams provide and support a seamless hybrid work environment for all employees.
