Job description

Overview

HarperCollins seeks an Editor with a passion for sequential storytelling to join its graphic novel imprint, HarperAlley. Established in 2020, HarperAlley is a collaborative, creator-focused publisher of graphic novels for readers across all age categories and genres. The Editor will report to the VP/Publisher of HarperAlley and will acquire and edit a select number of titles while bringing their own fresh ideas to the table. The highly motivated candidate will have a collaborative spirit and work across the division with a creative and dynamic group to publish groundbreaking books that will resonate with readers all around the world.

Responsibilities
  • Acquire and edit approximately 8–10 titles per year.
  • Have a deep understanding of the graphic novel industry across all age categories and formats.
  • Possess a strong interest in Manga, Manhwa, Light Novels, and other Manga-related forms.
  • Shepherd materials through the production process and oversee all aspects of the publication process, collaborating with Editorial, Design, Production, Marketing, and Sales departments throughout a project’s development.
  • Establish and maintain strong and extensive agent and author relationships.
  • Read and evaluate submissions and contribute thoughtful feedback to Editorial meetings.
  • Write copy, including title sheets, flap copy, selling copy, and catalog copy; review marketing and publicity materials.
  • Conduct sales research, create P&Ls, draft contract requests.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years’ editorial experience in the graphic novel industry.
  • Strong understanding of the graphic novel editorial process a must.
  • Knowledge of key authors and artists in the graphic novel space a plus.
  • Strong understanding and passion for manga and anime strongly preferred.
  • College-level degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and understanding of Adobe Creative Suite and ClipStudio strongly preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of social media platforms a plus.
  • Occasional travel required.

The salary for this position is $65,000-$75,000. We recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company. As a result, we aim for flexibility in structuring competitive compensation offers to ensure we are able to attract the best candidates. The quoted salary range represents our good faith estimate as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect, and we tailor our offers within the range based on the selected candidate's experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other factors that may prove relevant during the interview process.
