Freelance Social Media Editor (Reels + Short-Form Video)
Location: Remote (NYC-based preferred)
Job Type: Freelance / Project-Based
Rate: Competitive, commensurate with experience
Start Date: ASAP
Observer seeks a freelance social media editor for short-form video content. Your job: transform our stories into visually compelling, editorially biting Reels and videos for Instagram, TikTok and emerging platforms. We’re looking for someone who knows how to distill a feature on hedge fund intrigue, Met Gala antics, or art-world maneuverings into a 30-second scroll-stopper—with style, wit and precision. Think less influencer energy, more media-savvy provocateur.
What You’ll Do
- Create short-form video content from Observer articles (Reels, TikToks, Shorts) that align with our voice and audience
- Build and maintain a consistent visual style and pacing that feels smart, curated, and quietly cutting
- Work with our editorial team to select the best angles and headlines for video adaptation
- Write punchy, platform-native captions and overlays
- Stay up to date on relevant social trends, but never follow blindly
You Are
- A seasoned short-form editor with at least 2+ years creating content for reputable media brands or platforms
- Fluent in Canva, Adobe Premiere, CapCut, or comparable editing tools
- Deeply familiar with the aesthetics and behaviors of Reels, TikTok, and Shorts
- Able to transform written editorial into a dynamic visual story—without dumbing it down
- Obsessed with culture, media, fashion, politics, finance, and the absurdities of modern influence
To Apply
Send your resume, links to recent relevant video work (Reels, TikToks, Shorts), and a brief note on why you’re the right fit to jobs@observer.com. Bonus points if you include a mock Reel using one of our existing articles. We’re not looking for generic content creators. We’re looking for someone who can turn a luxury real estate exposé into a cinematic mini-satire. If that sounds like your lane, we want to hear from you.
