SCHEDULE - Hourly. The work week is typically 37.5 hours per week that may include night or weekend work as required. Days may begin early and end late depending on editing and production requirements.
OVERVIEW OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES - The Editor is the key staff editor in handling day-to-day reporting, editing and story selection, copy editing, proofing, design and pagination of the newspaper, including special or niche publications as required. The Editor assists in choosing content and determining story and graphics placements for the news and features sections, and oversees their overall design. The Editor must demonstrate extraordinary news judgment in choosing stories and advising in the placement of local stories.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Bachelor or other 4-year degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent. Strong planning orientation. Professional proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English. Valid drivers’ license and proof of insurance. Basic literacy in computer software, including word processing and Internet browsing/research. Thorough familiarity with AP Style and local modifications. Familiarity with InDesign and Blox. Knowledge of current design trends and advancements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS -Previous experience as an editor; demonstrated growth and progressive responsibilities as an editor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT - The newsroom is an intense, demanding environment that requires steady leadership skills and consistent focus. The Editor should maintain a calm, objective and professional demeanor in adverse or emergency situations. The Editor must cordially handle inquiries or observations from the public, including angry responses. The Editor must treat all other newsroom workers with dignity and respect while defining and enforcing expectations.
