Job summary

Commonwealth of VA Careers seeks entry‑level Civil Engineer I to participate in the EDGE program, applying engineering studies to carry out construction, environmental, and planning tasks within VDOT. Responsibilities include field inspections and project documentation across multiple disciplines.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or ABET-aligned program by start of employment.
• Ability to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) and obtain EIT within 12 months.
• Knowledge of highway construction principles.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Skill in basic computer operations.

Responsibilities

• Perform field inspections and project documentation for construction projects.
• Support environmental, maintenance, materials, planning, and right‑of‑way activities.
• Develop roadway designs for complex transportation projects.
• Participate in EDGE program to apply engineering studies as a VDOT engineer.
• Contribute to the design and analysis of roadway structures and traffic operations.
