OpenAI's Hardware organization is building AI-native silicon and system-level solutions. This Infrastructure Software Engineer role focuses on designing and scaling cloud infrastructure, HPC environments, CI/CD pipelines, and developer workflows that accelerate OpenAI's custom silicon development across the full hardware lifecycle.
What You'll Do
- Build developer tools and workflows that automate hardware engineering processes and accelerate productivity
- Design, implement, and operate large-scale regression systems for job scheduling, execution, results collection, and reporting
- Build and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure, developer tooling, and cluster configurations
- Design and operate cloud infrastructure and high-performance compute clusters, optimizing scheduling, capacity, and cost efficiency
- Develop data pipelines, monitoring systems, and observability infrastructure to provide visibility into regression results and resource utilization
- Troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues, improve alerting, and build resilient, maintainable systems
What You Need
- Strong software engineering fundamentals with proficiency in Python or similar programming language
- Deep technical expertise in at least one infrastructure domain: Linux/HPC environments, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD systems, storage, or networking
- Experience designing, deploying, and operating cloud infrastructure, preferably Azure, with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or Bicep
- Strong Linux systems knowledge including processes, filesystems, networking, permissions, and performance troubleshooting
- Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, Buildkite, GitHub Actions, or similar platforms
Nice to Have
- Experience supporting ASIC or semiconductor development environments including EDA workflows, design verification, physical design, emulation, or formal verification
- Experience operating large-scale HPC clusters or workload schedulers such as Slurm
- Familiarity with enterprise identity and authentication systems such as Entra ID, OpenLDAP, FreeIPA, or SSSD
- Experience designing and operating relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
