The Department of Revenue, Tax Division is recruiting for an Economist 2/3 in Anchorage or Juneau!
This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify.
Pay will be determined based on location of selected individual.
Develop, operate, refine, and maintain quantitative economic and revenue models that generate Alaska’s official non-petroleum revenue forecasts. This includes building defensible forecasting tools for corporate income tax (petroleum and non-petroleum) and statewide taxes such as motor fuel, tobacco, fisheries, estate, and mining license taxes; coordinating with agencies for data inputs; and producing accurate, high-visibility analytical work that informs statewide fiscal and budget decisions.
Evaluate the economic impacts of policies, projects, and statewide trends by operating REMI or similar macroeconomic modeling software; preparing and processing large datasets; developing and documenting modeling methodologies; validating assumptions; and producing clear, defensible analysis used by agencies, legislators, and executive leadership.
Design and execute economic research projects—ranging from recurring analytical assignments to innovative, broad-scope studies—by applying economic theory, statistical techniques, and quantitative reasoning to imperfect, complex, or emerging datasets. Produce high-quality white papers, technical memoranda, executive briefings, tables, charts, and presentations that effectively communicate revenue trends and economic findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Develop or assist in developing fiscal impact estimates and fiscal notes for proposed legislation affecting non-oil revenues. This includes evaluating statutory changes, analyzing potential revenue impacts, summarizing fiscal implications, responding to legislative inquiries, and supporting higher-level staff during committee hearings as needed.
Specialize in non-petroleum revenue analysis while contributing to interconnected economic and policy questions across the broader statewide revenue landscape. Your work will support both short-turnaround research requests and long-term model development projects, requiring collaboration with internal experts, independent judgment, and adaptation of standard methodologies to new or unprecedented economic issues.
We have a strong preference for candidates with demonstrated quantitative aptitude and experience working with large datasets and complex economic models, who consistently produce accurate, error-free analytical work under tight deadlines and can independently manage both short-turnaround tasks and long-term projects. Experience with tax policy, macroeconomic modeling, or industry-specific economic analysis is highly valued and enhances the precision and effectiveness of statewide revenue forecasting.
The Department of Revenue’s mission is to collect and invest funds for public purposes to benefit Alaskans, and this position contributes to that mission by producing rigorous, data-driven economic and revenue analysis that informs tax policy, fiscal planning, and statewide decision-making. We value accuracy, integrity, collaboration, curiosity, innovation, and public service, and offer an environment that supports meaningful analytical work and continued professional growth.
Working in the Economic Research Group offers meaningful public service where your analysis helps shape Alaska’s long-term fiscal future, while providing hands‑on experience with complex economic and policy issues, mentorship from experienced experts, and access to the State of Alaska’s comprehensive benefits, including strong retirement options, generous leave, and professional development resources. Our team supports a healthy work‑life balance with structured schedules, predictable workloads, and hybrid telework flexibility, offering a rare combination of stability, growth, public impact, and a supportive environment committed to high‑quality economic work.
This position is being recruited as a dual location recruitment and can be located in either the State Office Building in Juneau or the Atwood Building in downtown Anchorage. After your initial training, the option of hybrid telework may be explored to further support productivity and a strong work‑life balance.
