Job summary

Children’s Wisconsin is seeking a Pediatric Echocardiography Technician to perform non-invasive cardiac studies under cardiologist direction. You will operate ultrasound equipment, prepare initial reports, and collaborate with the cardiology team.

The role requires pediatric-focused echocardiography training, proficiency with Doppler and B-mode imaging, and ongoing credentialing toward pediatric certification. You will contribute to a busy echo lab while supporting patient families.

Qualifications

• Must show ability to interact effectively with physicians, families and students.
• Requires basic transthoracic echo skills and Doppler views as outlined in pediatric protocols.
• Registration as a Pediatric ECHO Tech within 2 years of hire is required or pursued.

Responsibilities

• Operate non-invasive echocardiography equipment per procedure.
• Prepare preliminary echocardiography reports for cardiologist interpretation.
• Review studies with cardiologist and maintain lab/equipment.
• Log patient information and assist with hospital billing using EPIC.
• Maintain accuracy and progress toward board certification with Level II mentorship.

Job Summary

Reporting administratively to the Herma Heart Echocardiography Technician Supervisor, and under the technical direction of a cardiologist performs non-invasive cardiac studies according to procedures. Operates echocardiograph diagnostic equipment and maintains echocardiographic laboratory.

• Understand and satisfies the needs of the neonatal, infant, toddler, pre-school, school-age, adolescent and/or adult patient in regards to their growth and development process.
• Operates echocardiographic equipment according to procedure, in order to produce diagnostic studies.
• Competent in basic transthoracic echo; B-Mode (para-sternal, apical, subcostal and supra-sternal views) and Doppler (including color).
• Explains echocardiography procedure process to patients, parents as necessary.
• Prepares preliminary echocardiography report for cardiologist interpretation. Reviews studies with cardiologist.
• Maintains lab and equipment in clean and proper working order for maximum function.
• Records pertinent patient information in echo logbooks. Completes hospital billing process for patient billing by use of EPIC.
• Demonstrates progressive analytical skills and ability to work independently and accurately in performing diagnostic echocardiograph study in order to prove underlying cardiac pathology to cardiologists who interpret results within 2 years of hire.
• Along with the mentoring Level II echo tech, maintain a log of progression of congenital heart echoes to demonstrate competencies and train for board certification.

Experience

• Previous echocardiographic experience in a pediatric setting preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Requires job knowledge acquired through a high school education plus two years of advanced education in echocardiography.
• Requires registration as a Pediatric ECHO Tech within 2 years of date of hire, if not prior to hire.
• Analytical skills required to perform basic diagnostic echocardiograph studies, which demonstrate underlying cardiac pathology to cardiologists who interpret results. These skills will be expected to progress within 2 years of hire to include identification of all congenital heart disease anatomy.
• Interpersonal skills necessary in order to interact effectively with physicians, families, patients and students. Ability to elicit cooperation form children in order to complete studies is desired.
• Ability to push heavy (300 - 400 pounds) equipment through the hospital. Echo machine is on wheels to support easier movement.
