Summary:

  • The incumbent will perform highly skilled, specialized, non-invasive tests used to diagnose cardiological abnormalities and participate in research activities using sophisticated mechanical and electronic instruments and microcomputers.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform highly skilled, specialized non-invasive tests used to diagnose cardiological abnormalities and participate in research activities using sophisticated mechanical and electronic instruments and microcomputers.
  • Arrange schedule for patient echocardiography studies; prioritize requests by reviewing orders and securing additional information from referring physicians when necessary.
  • Conduct M-Mode, 2-D, Doppler echocardiogram and color flow Doppler studies in various settings without physician supervision. Determine appropriate views; modify studies according to cardiac abnormalities detected; conduct primary readings; notify physicians of urgent findings.
  • Assist physicians with transesophageal echocardiograms performed under conscious sedation in the laboratory and OR.
  • Perform exercise stress and pharmacologic stress echocardiograms.
  • Coordinate daily operation of the echo laboratory to ensure optimal quality; adjust to departmental needs; maintain logs and assist with monthly statistics.
  • Edit and copy videotapes; maintain test files; create teaching tapes.
  • Mark all M-Mode measurements; complete demographic info accurately; log patient examinations; update orders as needed.
  • Perform minor maintenance on instruments.
  • Adhere to Penn Medicine policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the unit and department.

Credentials:

  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (Required)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Associate's Degree in Cardiovascular/Cardiopulmonary technology and 2+ years of Echocardiography experience. Registry required. Significant experience may substitute for degree.
