Position:

EHS Teacher I - Category: Full time; Hourly; Non-exempt. Supervisor: Director. Revised: 05/07/2024.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the ECE Assistant Director, the Teacher I will support all levels of staff in the BSR ECE Department’s Early Head Start Program. Responsibilities include supervising children, preparing materials for learning activities, guiding children during learning activities, maintaining a safe and sanitary environment, and collaborating with parents to meet children’s needs. The Teacher I assists program teams in meeting the families and children served under funding requirements and compliance mandates of the Department.

Job Responsibilities:

• Provide a safe, healthy learning environment for children.
• Follow all federal, state, and tribal regulations regarding instruction practices, fire, health, and safety standards, including hand washing, laundry, and housekeeping practices.
• Conduct assigned staff responsibilities regarding lesson plans, evaluations, and records. Formulate lesson plans for classroom activities and home learning tasks.
• Ensure daily completion of USDA meal count. Self-monitor classroom documentation to ensure systems and procedures are followed per written guidance and timelines.
• Enhance physical and intellectual competence in children by promoting physical, cognitive, language, creative skills, and meeting the needs of children who require special services. Attend teacher meetings as scheduled to facilitate mentoring and classroom staff support in ECE.
• Reinforce positive communication, respect, and interaction between children and adults.
• Communicate with and actively involve parents in all aspects of site activities through parent‑teacher conferences, open house, community gatherings, and brainstorming sessions.
• Follow established program curriculums, procedures, documentation, and service plans. Provide support to staff and EHS partners. Perform administrative duties as assigned and collaborate with teachers to maintain consistency and best practices.
• Model appropriate instructional techniques for teachers and volunteers and assist in completing all appropriate documentation, including Daily Assessment forms, Feeding Guides, and Health Reports.
• Actively participate in age‑appropriate interactions and classroom activities such as free play, mealtime, floor time, and class activities. May include bathing, diaper changing, and formula preparation for infants, following site procedures.
• Administer educational screenings, identify, and refer children with potential high risk of health, disability, or behavioral concerns.
• Maintain confidentiality of program and client‑related information and report any indication of abuse or neglect.
• Maintain professional knowledge by attending meetings, conferences, and educational workshops.
• Contribute to a team effort and accomplish related results as required.
• Perform other duties as required.

Job Position Requires:

Obtain within four (4) months of hire, or possess, a current Infant‑Toddler Child Development Associate Certificate (CDA) or current California Child Development Associate Teacher Permit; or have an associate degree in early childhood education or Child Development and 3 units in Infant/Toddler course; must continue taking ECE or CD classes, or earn a bachelor’s degree in child development, Early Childhood Education, or equivalent coursework (12 units of ECE/CD classes). First Aid, CPR, and California Food Handlers’ certifications must be obtained within six (6) months of hire. High School Diploma, GED, or CHSPE required. Experience with Native Communities is preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C drivers’ license and qualify for employer insurability throughout the course of employment. Must successfully pass pre‑employment drug/alcohol screening, pre‑employment health screening and TB clearance, and background investigation.

• Having sensitivity to the Native American culture, tradition and BSR community’s health, education, and welfare needs.
• Good writing and organization skills and the ability to organize, maintain and submit records and reports if needed.
• Having a good understanding and working knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications.
• The ability to work independently and support a team environment.
• The ability to present information one‑on‑one, to small groups and to the BSR.

Physical Requirements:

The employee regularly sits; uses hands and fingers to handle or feel; talks or hears. Occasionally the employee stands, walks, reaches with hands and arms, and lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:

The work is generally performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level. Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required. Travel may be required.
