Qualifications
- High School diploma, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which proves the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Must meet paraprofessional requirements under “No Child Left Behind.”
- Completion of 48 semester hours of college credits, or
- Successful completion of a series of WorkKeys assessments plus earn 96 contact hours of appropriate staff development
- Due to licensing requirements, preschool assistants must have an associate's degree in Early Childhood Development
- Must become initially certified in a Crisis Intervention Program (specific program to be determined by MCS Exceptional Children’s Department) and maintain that certification through the proper renewal process (adhering to all timelines)
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required
Essential Job Functions
- Performs, under general supervision, a variety of technical and clerical tasks in assisting a teacher of students with disabilities
- Performs a wide range of tasks in order to support the efforts of the teacher, meet the needs of all students, and ensure the provision of quality instruction for all students
- Provides one‑on‑one assistance with academics and behavioral problems and may lead small group activities
- Assists teacher with general housekeeping, clerical duties and repair/maintenance of school equipment
- Stays abreast of activities performed by the teacher, daily routines of the classroom, student handbook rules, handbook of Parent’s Rights and procedures to follow in the event of an emergency
- Obtains and maintains basic first aid and CPR certification
- Stays abreast of methods of adapting instruction, equipment and tools, confidentiality regulations, school administration principles, curriculum for the child’s grade/age, and child development disabilities
- Assists teacher with executing instruction and evaluating its effectiveness
- Constantly monitors the safety and wellbeing of students; encourages self‑esteem and independence
- Monitors student behavior, helps maintain discipline, records out‑of‑class suspension, assists with crisis prevention, restrains students as needed
- Assists learning; reinforces instructions; conduct short sessions on study skills; create/modify materials; modify tests; provide one‑on‑one assistance as needed
- Maintains standardized records, documentation of student progress
- Performs clerical duties, maintains records, files incident reports, grades papers, checks attendance, copies, prepares instructional materials, operates audiovisual equipment, orders supplies, maintains class files
- Feeds students when necessary; provides toileting assistance; performs other tasks students cannot perform
- Participates in staff development as directed
- Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by supervisor
Life Skills and other EC classes (and other students as appropriate)
- Assists with special services for students needing functional life skills; performs daily living tasks (tube feeding, catheterization, toileting, diaper changes, lifting, wheelchairs, other adapted equipment) under school nurse supervision; provides one‑on‑one academic instruction; keeps students on task during group instruction
- Assists with therapeutic rehabilitation; prepares students for therapy and other special classes; administers medications; monitors special diets
- Incorporates fine motor skills, sensory stimulation, self‑help skills, social skills, computer skills into class activities
- Performs housekeeping duties; sets up equipment mornings; stores after school; washes mats, toys using cleaning supplies; performs simple repairs/maintenance of student and school equipment
- Accepts exposure to blood‑borne pathogens; must wear PPE such as latex gloves
NOTE: All medically related procedures will be under the training and supervision of the school nurse (R.N.).
Pre‑Kindergarten Classes
- Assists teacher in setting up room; greets students; assists with personal belongings
- Supports teacher activities; assists learning in small groups; gives one‑on‑one assistance; facilitates learning; participates in activities for children with special needs; listens, reads stories
- Monitors behavior; rewards good behavior; responds to inappropriate behavior as instructed; supervises free time
- Prepares daily snack
- Works with special programs: field trips, physical education assistance, instruction of emergency procedures, lunch, bus, hall duty, compliance with childcare licensure and sanitation rules
- May accompany teacher on home visits
Physical and Cognitive Requirements
The mandatory physical and cognitive requirements are applicable to this job classification within Moore County Schools.
Work is considered light physical work requiring exertion up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and negligible force frequently or constantly.
