Job Overview

The Exceptional Children Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction to students with disabilities or exceptional learning needs. This role requires adherence to Board policies and compliance with instructions from supervisors.


The teacher will ensure that educational goals for students with special needs are met and that a safe, inclusive, and effective learning environment is maintained.


The teacher must meet or exceed the North Carolina evaluation standards and follow all guidelines for working with exceptional children.


Essential Job Functions


  • Arrive at school each day at an appropriate time designated by the principal, ready and prepared to complete all assigned duties.

  • Prepare to meet the specific needs of students with disabilities and exceptional needs throughout the day.

  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for each student.

  • Adapt and modify the curriculum to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities.

  • Deliver differentiated instruction in small groups or individual settings to ensure students are meeting academic goals.

  • Completion of all assigned and/or accepted extracurricular and non‑instructional duties in a timely and professional manner

    • Bus duty

    • Cafeteria supervision

    • Playground duty

    • Supervision of extra‑curricular activities (subject to license and board policy)

    • Service on committees

    • All other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent, principal, or other supervisor(s)



  • Participate in required staff meetings and student‑related meetings, including those for students with special needs.

  • When the employee is absent, complete detailed plans for all classes/assigned duties during the period of absence. If an absence can be anticipated, plans should be left the day before the absence occurs; emergency lesson plans should be kept on file as designated by the principal.

  • Delivery of instruction that will ensure attainment of educational goals and objectives. Each teacher will prepare daily well‑prepared lesson plans to help ensure superior delivery of the curriculum program.

  • Respond to all parent inquiries, complaints and/or concerns in a timely and professional manner.

  • Manage students’ behavior to minimize disruption to the educational environment and refer students, as necessary, to the administration for disciplinary action.

  • Seek clarification whenever unsure about any of the requirements of the policy.


Physical and Cognitive Requirements

The major physical and cognitive requirements for this job classification include light physical work requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.



  • Adapt to the varied needs of students: be flexible in adjusting teaching methods and behavior management techniques based on students' unique needs.

  • Work with a diverse student population: have patience and understanding with students of varying abilities and backgrounds, including those with emotional, cognitive, and physical disabilities.

  • Assist students physically: help with mobility or tasks requiring physical support, such as moving around the classroom or using adaptive equipment.

  • Perform physical movements such as walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, kneel, crouch, or repetitive motions.

  • Use visual acuity in preparing and analyzing written or computer data; visually inspect small defects or parts.

  • Operate variety of machines, motor vehicles, hand, and job‑specific equipment and tools.

  • Determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work.

  • Observe general surroundings and activities.

  • Communicate by spoken word to express or exchange ideas and convey detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.

  • Work safely in situations of exposure to bloodborne pathogens requiring specialized protective equipment.

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Establish positive relationships with students.

  • Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.

  • Perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress, and adapt when confronted with emergency situations.

  • Work with both children and adults with disabilities.

  • Talk (express or exchange ideas by spoken words); hear (perceive nature of sounds by ear).
