Job summary

UCAR – The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO is seeking a Software Engineer to help modernize the CESM modeling ecosystem toward new architectures and hardware portability. The role focuses on performance, profiling, and rapid development for the scientific community.

You will work with CGD staff and researchers, review existing code for quality, and document decisions to share knowledge across teams. Familiarity with Fortran/C/C++ and parallel programming is valued.

Qualifications

• Proven ability to identify performance bottlenecks through profiling and testing.
• Ability to recommend modernization strategies including refactoring and updating libraries.
• Experience with software requirements analysis and design of components.
• Ability to work independently and in a team on challenging software projects.
• Attention to detail and clear communication of complexities.
• Experience with at least one compiled language (Fortran, C, C++).

Responsibilities

• Participates in enhancement of the CESM modeling ecosystem for performance and portability.
• Collaborates with team members and stakeholders on model integration changes.
• Review and analyze existing modeling software capabilities for quality and maintainability.
• Document findings and decisions to support knowledge sharing across scientists and engineers.
• Explore benchmarks in newer languages and paradigms; stay current with tools and techniques.
